Is Mack Brown tough enough?

It's a sore spot with Mack Brown. As it is with the fans and followers of his Texas football program. And that could be a good sign. If the Longhorns are to become the hard-nosed team that Brown desires and truly maximize their considerable abilities, they must be held as accountable for all of 2008 as they were in the days following last year's regular-season finale leading up to the Holiday Bowl. And that's on the coaching staff. Mack the nice has to vividly remember what mean Mack accomplished after that dreary loss to Texas A&M, the fourth consecutive meeting with the Aggies that represented a subpar effort from the Longhorns. Mack took charge and put a charge in his players, and it played like it against a very good Arizona State team. The team had rugged practices. Starting spots were openly contested. Conditioning was emphasized. No depth chart was released. Boot camp was the order of the day.

Yes, let's hope Mack learned a valuable lesson last December. He's a good coach and proved it as he won ten games last year with a subpar defense. If he can maintain a season like he maintained last December, this Texas squad should exceed expectations by far.

I think that picture of him is from the NC game a few years back when Mack was starring at the Song Girls.

No, he's not, you can tell the way he talks.

July 30, 2008  12:02 PM ET

He isn't tough enough but leave Mack alone already. He's done a good job at Texas.

The guy is a winner, pure & simple. There are times he his a goober, but he ha turned texas into a perrienal national contender. I think that eventually, Major will be the head coach.

GO BIG RED !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mack is a fine recruiter, he is the worst game day coach I think I've ever seen. If he sticks to the attitude he came up with for last years ASU win, then I could be swayed to change my opinion. After 50 years of Longhorn support I am growing tired of his losses to oU and UTa&m

"worst game day coach I think I've ever seen"

........what?

July 30, 2008  05:59 PM ET

No one would question Mack's toughness if he could just remove OU and, as of late, K-State and A&M from the schedule.

July 30, 2008  07:45 PM ET

If he drives his team this season like he did in the run up to the ASU game, they will be very hard for anybody to beat. They have the talent. I just don't think it has always been drawn out of the players by the coaching staff.

tough enough? show me tougher with more consistent long term results? Stoops.......yup. I give you that one. Carroll? similar toughness, better results. Tressell? probably. now thats about it. further, Mack has kept some guys til their senior year because of the loyalty he fosters. some of these others can't/don't do that. I don't think Mack is the best coach in the country, but unless you are OU, Ohio state, USC then you'd be dang lucky to have him.

Mack Brown is just a facade as a head coach. If it were not for Tommy Tuberville's eye for defensive coaching talent, and Brown's covetous nature; Texas would not have a National Championship under his tenure. He even raided Auburn again for another coordinator. He would be like his brother Watson without these two steals...nice guy, can't coach

Best coach in the world on a living room couch in February. Gut can flat out recruit. OC Greg Davis holds him backa little.

I said it, you read it. His ability to recruit from one of the greatest talent pools in the country is the only thing that keeps him working for now. He really only needs to win two games a year, oU and UTa&m. if he continues to drop those two games he will be gone, the Alumni will see to it.

Now before y'll go knocking me thinking I'm an upside-down-longhorn-totin' smack-takin' sooner fan, be aware I'm going to UT law next year and I don't hate the longhorns.

That said, I think Mack's awfully lucky that VY came along and won a title for him and saved his job as head coach.

And that's all I have to say about that.

July 31, 2008  12:43 PM ET

Look guys, I used to make the argument myself: "VY saved Mack's job; Mack got a NC because of Vince." But that argument can be made for a lot of teams. Would Tressel have won without Clarett? Would Meyer have won without Tebow? Would Phil Jackson have won without MJ? The argument can be made for a lot of Championship teams. Texas has always been good with Mack, but Vince got them over the hump. Don't take away from what Mack has CONSISTENTLY done over the years. Let's not forget, he did make North Carolina a team to be reckoned with over a decade ago.

I don't know, DSLIQ, all I know is pre-Vince, the rallying cry out of Austin was "fire Mack!," and I'm not sure one conference title every ten years is going to be enough to keep him around. I'm not saying he's not a decent coach. I just think the expectations in Austin are higher than what Mack's producing.

With the recruits they get UT should be Top 5 every year, hands down, no argument!!!
