Preds sale may embarrass league
Two NHL owners who stood to gain if William J. "Boots" Del Biaggio III bought a stake in the Nashville Predators lent the California financier and the team a total of $27 million to help close the deal in December, according to court records, interviews and confidential internal documents obtained by The Tennessean. The two lenders -- sports and entertainment giant AEG, which owns the NHL's Los Angeles Kings, and then-Predators owner Craig Leipold -- were in the inner circle of NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman. However, Bettman says he knew nothing about the loans to Del Biaggio at the time the Predators' sale was finalized in December. With Del Biaggio in bankruptcy and accused of fraud in several lawsuits, the loans from the NHL owners raise potentially embarrassing questions about how well the National Hockey League screens potential owners, and the integrity of that screening process. It also raises the question of whether Bettman or the NHL would have been alerted to Del Biaggio's cash problems had the commissioner been aware two of the league's owners were lending Del Biaggio millions of dollars. The sale allowed Leipold to break with the Preds and with Nashville, and opened the door for him to buy the NHL's Minnesota Wild franchise earlier this year. AEG also stood to benefit. It has made no secret of its desire to have an NHL team as an anchor tenant at Kansas City's gleaming new Sprint Center, which AEG manages and in which it owns a stake. The firm had previously had a contract with Del Biaggio to try to get an NHL team there.

This just goes to show what a second rate league the NHL is. Bettman wanted to stack the scenario so that he could install a patsy who would move the team where he wanted them to go. Balsillie is flush with cash and wanted to buy and move the team, but he was treated like a leper by the league office because he wanted to move the team to Canada. Bettman is a snake in the grass and always had been. The league will be better off the day they oust him from power.

The league is not "second rate". This story just proves that the Bett-Man is much more interested in protecting his own ego than doing what's best for the league. A more objective, rational boss would admit that franchises like Nashville, Florida and Phoenix were honest mistakes, and in the case of Nashville, allow the team to sell to Balsillie, move it to Canada where they no doubt would have great success and the league would ultimately be better for it, rather than "embarrased" like it is now.

Bettman is a glory-seeking ****. Always has been, always will be. Gotta love a Commissioner who gets Boo'ed off the ice during a Stanley Cup presentation!

Anything dealing with the Nashville Predators in an embarrassment to the league. Just let Balsillie buy the team and move it to Canada, where it will become the 7th team in the league which keeps the NHL afloat.

If this doesn't lead to Gary Bettman's demise I don't know what will. Either he knew about the loans, in which case he should be fired, or he didn't, in which case he isn't very good at his job and should resign on principle (assuming he knows what that means). He can't have it both ways round.

And if the NHL isn't embarrassed by this idiot commissioner, how can they be embarrassed by ANYTHING

AEG benefiting? How does putting hockey in Kansas City help the league? That's as dumb a move as having the NHL in Phoenix or Nashville.

I don't get KC as a destination for the NHL either. I think the league has the potential to regain a important part of the sport market in the US because of things like the Winter Classic and the young exciting players coming into the league. But, there needs to be another team or 2 in Canada and about 4 less teams in the league overall. NHL overextended itself; they need to admit that. And yes, Bettman is a snake.

Well, that same argument applies to one George W. Bush and a little place called Iraq. If W could get way with that there then I'm thinking Gary will get away with it here. Not fair, just the way it is.
BTW, I'll bet "Boots" and Gary know where Jimmy Hoffa is, too........and if he's ever found he WOULD make a good choice for Isles new coach.

The Preds sale already embarrassed the league when Leipold sold to the Boots group instead of to Balsille, who was offering more money. Mini-me will do everything he can to try and keep the preds in Nashville cuz if they move it makes him look like the idiot he is.
