Will MLS punish Fire's Blanco?

Chicago Fire star Cuauhtemoc Blanco has been suspended from U.S. Open Cup play for at least two years for his conduct during a quarterfinal game against D.C. United on July 8, a U.S. Soccer Federation panel ruled. The panel listened to testimony from the three game officials, United employees and Blanco. At age 35, Blanco will probably never play in the Open Cup again. (Somehow, I don't think he's heartbroken, though it is a blemish on his portfolio.) The question now is whether MLS will decide to review the incident as well. The league planned to wait for the USSF ruling before considering its own investigation. Blanco was red-carded in overtime for his involvement in a scuffle with United players at Maryland SoccerPlex. D.C.'s Marc Burch was also ejected. Later, after declining to leave the field in a timely manner, Blanco allegedly headbutted a United operations official.

No big deal to me anymore. He was your MVP in the All-Star Game, so I think you should left him off the hook or just suspend him for the US Open Cup games. No one cares about those games anyway and if Beckham did that then you wouldn't suspend him, so that's what should happen.

July 31, 2008  08:13 AM ET

I dont think he should be suspended by the MLS. This was the open cup competition and should only be punished in that competition. You'd be setting a dangerous precedent to cross punish.

With that said, Mexicans continue to show their unprofessional little cry babies. Pachuca and Atlanta has shown it in the last two days with their actions. I'm really starting to buy into the theory that the reason these idIots cant beat us is because of how unprofessional they are coupled with the fact that they have some sense of entitlement to the higharchy of world football.

Seems a little harsh, who was it that stomped out Ruiz last year? He's still playing and that's to me is worse then a punch.

They can't beat US teams on the national or club level because of something I've been trying to preach for ages now. The Mexican Primera Division and the Mexican National Team are garbage. They're chokers. They can take their goofy looking uniforms and stay down there. They are hacks - super dirty players. Being around longer doesn't make a league better.

Maybe I'm being too proud of my own nation, yes. But the MLS is still better than the MPD, no matter how you want to slice it.

July 31, 2008  09:03 AM ET

LAZYMIKE97- it was Clark who kick Ruiz in the chest and he received a 9 game suspension plus a pretty hefty fine....

anyhow, Clark shouldve been given a bonus... Ruiz is a blight in our league

July 31, 2008  09:03 AM ET

the suspension is fine.... not harsh, nor light

the MLS shouldnt be able to do anything as it wasnt a MLS event...

July 31, 2008  09:11 AM ET

He was representing the MLS, playing another MLS team in a club tournament. They should've at least honored the red card and sat him down 1 game.

July 31, 2008  09:30 AM ET

Why? If they haven't already, what would be the point? Besides, Blanco puts b*utts in the seats, which is good for MLS. Punishing him now would be like cutting your nose to spite your face!

You know what they say about Mexican futbol? Simpre mejorando! Siempre los mismos resultados! Always improving! Always the same resutls!

July 31, 2008  10:06 AM ET

Otergod- If anyone deserves a good whack it's Ruiz, besides he's on the ground all the time so the kick to the chest is the best option ususally, but that was pretty nasty. That's right, Clark was booted for the rest of the season

July 31, 2008  11:07 AM ET

he's a star. it was in US open cup play not MLS. nothing will or should happen past what already has.

July 31, 2008  11:18 AM ET

Fine him... hitting your money is the only way these idiots get the point.

Atlante and Pachuca were acting like little b1tches after their losses. It's giving the anti-SuperLiga people more of a reason to want to cancel the tournament.

July 31, 2008  11:35 AM ET

Once again its US vs Mexico, and once again the ignorant comments rain down. First off Chris Albright was instigating Atlante all game yesterday, second the guys who started the fight and got red carded were not even Mexican, oh but wait..."ignorance is bliss, right" (queue Banjo: "Them all be Mexican!) True the US has beaten Mexico in most of all recent games, i do congratulate them and their coach he has done a great job...but big freakin' deal, wow you can beat Mexico good for you, this is also a team who got beaten by some really weak south american teams as well. CHOKERS???
Do i need to remind you how WELL the US did in the WC...hmmm....what was it 1 whole goal, wow impressive!! Mexico needs to have its sights focused on bigger better teams like Argentina, Brazil and Euro teams, beating the US personally doesn't mean much, problem with Mexico is they take one step forward and two steps back, something the US team is also guilty of.

Bottom line guys, save your ignorant racist comments for a **** site, this is a soccer fan site.

Talk about harsh

2 year ban?

Hefty, i could see an X amt/ of games suspension, but this isn't good for MLS or the US Cup that one of the premier stars is banned

July 31, 2008  01:09 PM ET

the suspension is fine.... not harsh, nor light

But....Chicago is an MLS Team and they were representing the MLS in the Open Cup ....... the guys a monster on the pitch and i like his play but he should be suspended without a doubt

July 31, 2008  01:15 PM ET

A two year ban sounds bad at first, but does this guy really care and does it really matter to his team? As long as its not an MLS game, he won't get fined by his club and he won't give a crap. Personally I think the guy is a pathetic excuse of a human being. A good player? Absolutely. But if he headbutted me while I was trying to escort him off the field, I would knock him the **** out. I'm glad he is not on my team because I would hate myself for rooting for him.

Your not even the best team in your confederation how could you even imagine trying to set your sights on the worlds best. Beating the US doesnt mean much to you because you havent experienced it in a long long time...

Blanco is an over-rated chump who gives the sport a bad name; his classless acts versus United show how spoiled and arrogant he is, and as I said to my son following the incident: if he tried some of that garbage in the NHL or NFL he would get stomped into the ground. Imagine the "All-Star MVP" in another sport head-butting an opposing team's official!!! What a mess that would be, and it would carry a mjor suspension; MLS has to act here! VAMOS UNITED!!
