Yao's concerns about Artest

Yao Ming and Luis Scola spent Wednesday morning furiously exchanging test messages and opinions after word of the Ron Artest deal broke out of Houston. "For some reason, I like (Artest)," Yao said. "Because in the games we play against him, I hate him. When I text messaged with Luis, we talked about team chemistry. That's only what worries us. We worry about the new attitude to the team. We are adding talent to the team and we need that, but building team chemistry is important. This is not bad. I don't mean he is not welcome to Houston. But a new player always needs some time. Also, he was the biggest part of a team in Sacramento. He was a star player. We need more chemistry and more communication." Artest also brings plenty of personal baggage with him, his foray into the stands that touched off a riot at the Palace of Auburn Hills, Mich., being the lowlight of a turbulent-but-productive career. "There's worry. Obviously, yes," said Yao. "We will think about it, of course. Hopefully, he's not fighting anymore and going after a guy in the stands. I haven't talked to Ron yet, so it's hard to say. I have to find a way to talk to him and see what we can do as a basketball team. He has a history. But we know he is a physical player. He is a good player. He really can help us. And Ron is on a contract year, too. I think Ron Artest is a good player if coach (Rick) Adelman can control the team well."

Actually, there are plenty of clear-minded, stable people on the Houston team to keep Artest in control.
This article mentions Yao and Scola. They, along with T-Mac and the coach Rick Adelman, can provide an atmosphere of stability, where Artest can mature.
If Artest agrees to spend some time with Yao, that, especially, would be a calming influence.

Deja Vu. Here's what I wrote on the original post about Artest joining the Rockets:

Better get an interpreter for Yao so he knows what's going on when Artest has one of his many "meltdowns" !!!

Actually, you just gave me an interesting idea.
Since Yao is a very reserved, gentlemanly type of player, maybe Ron Artest can learn something by spending time with him. In fact, it would be interesting for Ron Artest to go visit China, as Yao's guest, and learn about the Chinese culture.
The exposure to Chinese culture may help Artest mature a bit.

Yao's completely dead-on with his concerns and everything, but was it necessary to talk to the media about it?

I wish Yao had half the heart of Artest, maybe if he did the Rockets would be a force in the west. Artest could toughen up this team on the defensive side of the ball.

Interesting to see negative comments on Yao when all he did was say what anyone would think about Artest. Also, everything he said was positive and fair. He praised Artest and his effort. He fairly appraised the benefit of having a more physical player in the low post. He fairly wondered about team chemistry and not once did he suggest Artest couldn't be controlled, merely that he had a history. So where is he wrong?

ya nothing will help with team chemistry like bringing up his altercation in detroit. real cool

IanSMK.. 4 years later and people still won't let it go.. amazing

artest hasn't done anything negative for 4 years and its not gonna be any differant. anybody remember barkleys rap sheet before leaving the 76ers?! but when he went to the desert he was became the man that brought manhood to a team that needed it. Suns weren't that bad either. So artest to houston is great. Artest loves the coach and houston needs someone who can actually take a hit

Yao needs to be concerned about staying healthy for a full season...

Let it go. You don't let things like that go, doofus. People are responsible for their actions. I guess you haven't learned that yet either.

Yao is really stepping up and being a leader.
Hopefully he dosnt get hurt again in the Olympics.

July 31, 2008  08:57 AM ET

I think I raised this concern yesterday, when I said the Shane Battier is a better player for this team. One thing I'd like to add tho. Ron Artest really respects Adelman, and if he'll work out anywhere, it will be back with his favorite coach.

Yao cares about the Rockets? Actions speak louder than words buddy. It doesn't look good when you fly off to China every second you get. Especially, when the NBA season is not even over.

We've all done things that we're not proud of, want mentioned, or dug up. However, to move forward and build a positive future, you can't live in the past. The brawl was wrong, but Artest wasn't the only culprit. He admitted to his involvement, served his time, and moved on. Why can't we? All in all he's a heck of a player, and a much better person; why, because he's learned from his mistakes, just like we all have.

July 31, 2008  09:06 AM ET

Yao has every right to be concerned .. Who wouldnt be when a loser, jerk-off like Artest is coming to your team .....?

July 31, 2008  09:08 AM ET

Yoa is wondering if the team trainer will be adminstering the prozac to Artest him self everyday. Ron is a grown man there should not be any talk of him maturing and growing up that should have allready happened. He does bring alot to Houston and baggage as well. A contract year I think Ron Ron will behave at least by his standards.

July 31, 2008  09:12 AM ET

Nothing wrong with Yao's assessments but that's something that he needed to keep private.
