O's may hang on to Sherrill
It's starting to look like the Orioles will hang on to George Sherrill, reducing the closer market further. They were hoping to get a starting shortstop for Sherrill, such as Milwaukee's terrific prospect Alcides Escobar or Anaheim's Erick Aybar. So far, no go. With Damaso Marte gone to the Yankees and Brian Fuentes likely staying in Colorado (Rockies GM Dan O'Dowd called a trade for Fuentes "highly unlikely'' a couple days ago, but a couple teams are still holding out hope), Oakland closer Huston Street may be alone on the market now. And some execs think A's GM Billy Beane may still wait for Street to bring his value back up.

Unless the O's can get bona fide starting pitching, it's not a bad move to hold on to Sherrill and let his value go up.
Maybe next year, they can either get much more for him, or keep what is becoming one of the best closers in the AL. It's a win-win either way.

Or maybe next year he comes back down to Earth and is horrible like the rest of the Orioles.

Or maybe, just maybe, the O's might actually become a competitive baseball team again, which would make keeping him a necessity.
I know, dream on...
