M's want too much for Washburn

The Mariners still must think they can acquire a haul for lefty starter Jarrod Washburn. They asked one National League team for two of its top prospects for a pitcher most teams think should have been traded to the Yankees by now. New York long ago offered to take Washburn and pay the rest of the $14 million left on his $37-million, four-year contract while sending Seattle a decent prospect. Instead, the Mariners have been trying for a home run. They want a top prospect back from the Yankees and for New York to pay Washburn's entire contract. Let's not forget, Washburn is 23-38 for the Mariners, though he does have a 2.44 ERA over his last nine starts.

Just getting NY to eat his contract should be enough for them. They are going NO WHERE this season and he is not worth what he is getting paid.

better then Ponson, or Hughs at this point. Mariners must be willing to pay out if they dont fold and deal today.

As a Yankee fan I hope we get him. If Seattle is dumb enough to sit on him hoping they'll get more they will fail.

Apparently Mr Interim GM is making a mess of it in Seattle. Trying the shop the team and getting nothing done.

July 31, 2008  08:56 AM ET

definitely un upgrade over Rasner and Ponson, and who knows with Pudge catching for him...

July 31, 2008  09:10 AM ET

Unless the Mariners get their heads out of their ****, they're gonna be stuck with this guy and his contract. Should have done the deal with the Yankees. I'd be surprised if Cash gives them anything more than what he's already offered. Maybe they'll concede at the 11th hour, who knows.

THIS TRADE SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE DAYS AGO. M's ARE OUT OF THEIR MINDS FOR NOT DUMPING THIS GUY. NOW THEY WANT 2 TOP PROSPECTS. INSANE IN THE MEMBRANE... INSANE IN THE BRAIN...

3:00PM - CAN'T GET HERE FAST ENOUGH.

THE LAST HOUR OF BEFORE THE TRADE DEADLINE WILL BE INCREDIBLE.

Seattle must be really over-valuing this guy.......

July 31, 2008  10:04 AM ET

Deal, no deal...Tick tick tic...

July 31, 2008  10:06 AM ET

Sadly, it looks like getting rid of the old GM hasn't made the organization any smarter. Seattle needs to **** wounds and rebuild. Holding out for the next Longoria or Braun in exchange for Washburn is bananas.

July 31, 2008  10:08 AM ET

Geez, when did it become taboo to say a person needs to l*ick his wounds and move on??

July 31, 2008  10:17 AM ET

Is it taboo to say ****? Cuz that's what Pete Gammons used to call me?

Seattle is incredibly stupid. They aren't making the postseason this year, and would have gotten good value for a guy who's old and on a hot streak (which increases his value). He won't be good much more in his career, and Seattle really needs to build more for the future, when many of their best players are at or near 30 years old (Ichiro, Ibanez, Bedard, Beltre).

July 31, 2008  11:14 AM ET

well ... what playeror players were offered for Washburn, Bozos? Here we have you all speculating what oofs the Mariners are for not trading Washburn right now for players, but if the offered player or players are nothing, then why not hang onto Washburn another year? Hey, Yankees if you don't need Washburn with the 2.44 era over his last 9 starts then bring up Kei Igawa again and see what you can squeeze out of him.

July 31, 2008  11:19 AM ET

I heard one of the radio guys (can't remember who) say it perfectly-

Either the new temp GM is trying to drive a hard bargain........
or he has absolutely no idea what he is doing

Seattle will get VERY desperate and cave by 4 PM today....Washburn will be a yankee...
