Rutgers reviewing athletic deals

Now that the Rutgers football team has arrived on the national scene, some claim it couldn't have happened without backroom deals. Rutgers is in the midst of a $102 million stadium expansion and renovation that, according to public reports, is short on funds and long on budget projections. There also are suspicions of jobs and contracts being awarded on the basis of personal relationships, rather than what's best for the university. So yesterday Rutgers University president Richard McCormick, a staunch proponent of the football program, announced a review of the athletic department. "We are aware of it and will do whatever is asked of us," Rutgers athletic director Bob Mulcahy said in a statement released by the school. Mulcahy signed a no-bid long-term marketing deal with Nelligan Sports Marketing, which then employed his son, Robert E Mulcahy - eight years ago. University council found there to be no conflict of interest.

Nice job New York Post. The Newark Star Ledger has been covering this for about two weeks now. Way to sniff out a big story. By the way, Mulcahy's days are numbered at RU, as are Paterno's at PSU. Realistic sports fans in New Jersey understand what this means will happen sometime in late-December...

Shady business deals in NJ... shocking...

It's not shady at all, it appeared in the SL in 2006. Blowing stories out of proportion like this keeps people's minds off disasters like the Xanadu project and all of the other NJ blunders.

Not surprising. But hell, all the other big schools do it anyway.

Genesis1869

Genesis1869, you must be reading those RU message boards too, like some people I know have and think they have uncovered the Star Ledger's "blunder". The Ledger in 2006, the story written you speak of had nothing to do with the fact that Mulcahy's son worked for Nelligan at the time. That little nugget that the Ledger just broke this week is what you call a no-no in terms of state ethics and public employees in the state.

Sorry Rutgers fans, but I see Rutgers taking a huge one season nose-dive this year without no Ray-Ray. I have them picked 7th in the Big East just ahead of Syracuse in a 8 team league.

Xanadu sucks.

If it's to good to be true then it is.
