Dodgers trying to get Maddux

On the eve of the non-waiver trade deadline, the Dodgers and San Diego Padres were in discussions about a potential deal involving pitcher Greg Maddux, according to baseball sources who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the talks. The deadline is 1 p.m. today. The Dodgers acquired the veteran right-hander Maddux at the trade deadline from the Chicago Cubs in 2006 and went on to reach the playoffs. He signed with the Padres as a free agent the next winter.

Great move by the Padres if they can get value.

NL West. The division that wasn't! Surely whoever goes out and spends a little to stay a game over .500 is going to win this dismal division.

This is a tough one for me as a San Diego fan. If the Padres can get the value for Maddux, and essentially go through with this salary dump, it's good for the future. But even in a season clearly lost for good, I still want to see Mad Dog in a Padres uniform for the rest of the year.

Torre's an old-school guy that believes in veterans who have been there before.....I think that is why he'd want Maddux. Not that I agree with that thinking.....

July 31, 2008  10:02 AM ET

The great thing here is, if they don't get Maddux, they can take a shot at one of his chins...

July 31, 2008  10:18 AM ET

Just another salary dump by the Pud-dumps. Like Tony Clark, they don't care what they get as long as someone else will pay the salary. Why can't we get someone like Mark Cuban to buy the Pads & begin fielding a major league team?

July 31, 2008  10:21 AM ET

Speaking of dumps, I'l be right back...

July 31, 2008  10:36 AM ET

Nothing against Maddux (a 1st ballot HOF'er for sure) but, while it would be a great move by the Padres, it makes no sense for the Dodgers. L.A. needs offense.

July 31, 2008  10:49 AM ET

I agree - the Dodgers need offense. What they don't need is to 'dump' their excellent 24 years old excellent hitter et al Matt Kemp. Everytime a trade seems a potential, his name gets put out. And why. He's potentially the very best of all their various non-pitching young players. When will they make Kemp the untouchable they should consider him now.

Dodgers may need his leadership but he will be little help.. they need bats. Jones deal has been a huge nail this season.

July 31, 2008  11:23 AM ET

The need hitting.. what the heck???

July 31, 2008  11:25 AM ET

damn... this guy still getting people out? Holy Cow.

July 31, 2008  11:28 AM ET

San Dog needs to move him for some prospects he's worthy of at least 3 as a proven vet he is a hall of famer for sure and probably will stay with the Dodgers in a contract extension once they get him

yep...still producing. and look at that neck and belly fat. as soon as he retires he can go back to being a CPA.

Hmmm, does Maddox want to be a dodger?

July 31, 2008  12:57 PM ET

He turned down the Phillies, guess he was afraid his high 80's junk would get knocked out of the band box in Philly.

July 31, 2008  12:58 PM ET

It is sad to watch this future first-ballot Hall of Famer being bandied about as trade bait to fill in a third or fourth starter slot with a mediocre team.

Maddux still has alot of years left to play, he will be a closer for some team in a few years.
