Goodell buys time for Packers

The staredown between Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers continued Thursday, with Commissioner Roger Goodell delaying Favre's reinstatement in hopes that the sides can come to an agreement about Favre's future. The delay by Goodell until at least Friday afternoon meant Favre would not be at the Packers' practice Friday, a situation the team wanted badly to avoid. Once Favre is reinstated, the Packers will have 24 hours to decide whether to add him to their active roster, release him or trade him.

I am confused as to why the commissioner is getting involved in a dispute between a team and it's player. I dont' see him getting involved in Plaxico's money dispute, or Brian Grants contract issue with GB. Why is Brett Favre so special that the commissioner needs to get involved. I know he is a hall of famer and one of the greatest players ever, but he is still just an employee.

You answered your own question to some degree. In fact, Brett Favre is a player with character in a league that generally lacks character in players. He was a hell-bent-for-leather, I want to win quarterback who could raise his team singlehandedly to winning when it really had nothing else. (I don't think Donald Driver would be the player he is without Favre.) He has made immaculate plays, improbable plays, impossible plays. He is the kind of player who can capture and has captured the imagination and allegiance of many more fans outside Green Bay.

Favre means a lot to the league as a very special player and Goodell has gotten into this because this is about much more than employee-employer relations - much more. How things are handled in GB will reflect upon the league and he wants to help resolve them. Burress, Grant, whoever - none of them matter as much to the League as Favre.

The guy's a legend but doesn't act like one. On the other hand, maybe that'll be part of the legend one day, too. Certainly he's gotten to the point he has by being himself.

Just how much time can money buy? Just ask Wall Street. Just how much time can money take? Just as Wall Street.

As your ship sails the Eastern Coast can you justify the time it takes to staredown the Great Brett Favre? Nay I say. Be off with you now!!!

Find a better cove to protect your gatherings from the likes of miscreants......
