How Blackhawks landed Bowman

The Blackhawks got an assist from family ties to land the services of a legendary hockey mind. Scotty Bowman, the winningest coach in NHL history and a member of 11 Stanley Cup champion teams, signed a three-year contract Thursday as the Hawks' senior adviser for hockey operations. Bowman, who had been a consultant with the Detroit Red Wings the last six seasons after coaching them to three Stanley Cup championships, will be an adviser to Hawks general manager Dale Tallon and son, Stan Bowman, who is the team's assistant GM.

Enough with these endless Blackhawks stories? When will T&R finally get us some Mats Sundin speculation stories?

August 1, 2008  07:25 AM ET

Wow, good move after good move for the Hawks. Making up for all the wasted years under Wirtz Sr.

August 1, 2008  07:27 AM ET

Bowman is smarter than the average bear! He always had a knack of landing himself in good situations! Montreal. Detroit. Pittsburg. And now, Chicago!

With new ownership and a team on the upswing, he's going to come out smelling like roses ... again! The only two places that did nothing for his reputation and where he didn't accomplish anything were Buffalo and St. Louis!

Nicely done yoda.

As a Detroit fan, I have to admit, watching the clip of Bowman putting on a Blackhawks jersey, but I can't complain. What he gave the Redwings can never be replaced. Best of luck to one of the best guys in sports.

And we all know, according to Mike Quigley, the best part about being a Blackhawks fan is you don't have to live in (the high expectations created by the best fans in the world who are located in) Detroit.

I have to admit, watching the clip of Bowman putting on a Blackhawks jersey made me throw up in my mouth a little bit*** is what I meant to say.

His time here in Detroit was great. Obviously, the move was based largely on family. However, it seems like Chicago is making some quality changes to move forward.

Will Bobby Hull be suiting up at LW?

August 1, 2008  08:04 AM ET

Agreed FromTheRough. Chicago has some great young talent, and could surprise a lot of people, not only this year, but for years to come, especially with Scotty.

It will be fun to see the rivalry ramp up again!

DC: Three straight Cup Finals with the Blues can't be ignored, even though the playoff format was set up to guarantee an expansion club would make it tothe Fanil in that era.

Final (pre-coffee dyslexia).

August 1, 2008  08:40 AM ET

Suprising move by Bowman. Not nessicarily a bad one, but suprising. When you think Scotty Bowman you think Detroit Redwings. Hope he does well.

Now that sounds like an NSL conspiracy to me!!!

Actually, that's exactly what it was. The NHL was trying to push the expansion clubs. They probably would have been better off doing a better expension draft. Keep in mind, this is also the league that had a regional draft for a while also, which is part of the reason the Canadiens had so many great players for so many years.

Well that sounds pretty conspiratorial to me, too!!! Maybe there's something to this after all......

I also think Scotty's St Louise days were orchestrated by Montreal as "training".

While the Habs did have rights to Q-Bec players, Torana had Ontario locked up for the most part as well.

Yet Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull, Bobby Orr and many others managed to evade those two teams.

Yep, with Stan Mikita at Center and Tony Esposito in net!

True! On anyone else's resumee, that would be impresive! But, to Scotty Bowman, anything less than the Stanley Cup didn't count as success! Just the kind of guy he is.

Say Spiny since we are not posting on sundin threads I will thank you from this one. Thanks for the autobiography but it is not such a prize, all anyone has to do for this prize is read T&R everyday. I believe they are writing the book as we read. Too bad this site is making us all hate Sundin. Oh and a huge THANK YOU goes out to SCOTTY for bringing the cup back to Detroit. A real class individual. I won't wish you luck on your new job since you went to a division rival. Keep close to your son in and my prayers for his health.

Absolutely. In a pre "Mini Me" NHL, the Canadian teams actually held a bit of power. Imagine that.

Another Cup and he moves on to something else. So much for the Wings draft pick looking forward to working with Scottie.

In my estimation, Bettman is still mad about Crosby not getting the Cup despite the conspiracy, so he forced Scottie on to a different team. You'll see. Next week we'll hear the news that the Red Wings this year will only be allowed to use wood sticks with no curve.
