Father knows best, and Ken Griffey Sr. knew it was time for his son to move on from the Reds. The elder Griffey, who works for the Reds as a scout, said Junior called him at 2 a.m. Thursday to tell him he had been traded to the White Sox and that the Reds needed his approval. He wanted advice. "I told him he had a great eight-year run in Cincinnati, nothing to apologize for," Senior said. "With the injuries, it was amazing he reached 600 homers. A great accomplishment. I told him the only thing he didn't have was the ring and that he should go for it. The White Sox have a chance to get him that ring." Senior said Junior said softly, "OK, Dad. Thanks."

Griffey will definitely add to an already powerful lineup. Their middle of the order already gives pitchers nightmares and Griffey will only make it worse. It was to bad they didn't have him for the Twins series, but then again I don't think it would have mattered.

:sniff:

cya JR, hope you get the ring you deserve.

Man, that was emotional. ;-(

It is such a shame that he was hurt with all those injuries. He would be easily over 700 HR's by now and would easily break Hank Aarons record. Damn Shame.

Has he been watching the same games I have? I'm a huge Reds fan and a Griffey fan, but come on the only thing great these past 8 years has been????????????

Can you actually f*cken believe that today ESPN mused whether this trade would get the White Sox to the World Series? Griffey is old and only a tiny offensive upgrade from Nick Swisher (OPS .787 vs..748). I think all anyone has to say is Cubs/White Sox World Series and everyone at FOX and ESPN gets a raging, blue steel hard on. If it happens, hey, then great for Chicago. Until it does, it is just becoming embarrassing watching the bozos at these networks shamelessly licking the taints of these two teams.

If the White Sox make it to the world series, it will have nothing to do with Griffey Jr.

August 1, 2008  09:49 AM ET

He is definetely a hall of fame player, but he is hitting like .245 this year with 15 home runs. I don't see how someone hitting .245 is going help that much.

Griffey's numbers will improve on the Sox...thats a fact. This is a way more potent lineup and its still Ken Griffey Jr., always a potential long ball when he is up just maybe not as frequent as in the past. He is also good in the clubhouse!

"Griffey's numbers will improve on the Sox...thats a fact. "

what makes you say that ?

and not that I am wishing any ill on him.....but I give him 2 weeks before he falls in the outfield and goes on the DL

Give JR some credit. In an age where needles and inflated bodies make fake records, JR did it the real way. He worked and earned it. Along the way to a HoF career, he's been a solid class act.

Kinda cool to see the inside of a father son relationship. Both Sr and Jr are class acts and always have been.

Nice to see Jr. was so psyched to come to the Sox.

I FIRMLY believe he didn't do roids-
he is a PERFECT example of 'normal' evolution-
AWESOME - ALL-TIME type player til about age 30-
then injury here & there....>
STEADY decline
Now just a shell of himself

I am NOT bashing his early accomplishments-
just commenting that NOW- he is a 38 year old man who is a 240 hitter, that probably can still put up 25 hrs..

ps- how has he been 'classy' ?

This has to be the worst trade ever. Jr. for a middle releiver and a second baseman you
