Red Sox fleeced in Manny deal?

For years, the Red Sox have not been able to deal Manny Ramirez because they couldn't receive fair market value for him. And you know something? They didn't get it this time. But I'll give the Red Sox credit for this: They made an organizational determination -- the players, the manager, the front office, the owners -- that this Ramirez disturbance was different and far more volatile than the others and perhaps would linger. There's no denying that the Red Sox gave up far more than they hoped to make this deal happen with the Dodgers and Pirates. They gave up Brandon Moss, one of the most popular players among the brass and manager Terry Francona. They gave up Craig Hansen, one of their recent first-round draft picks, who has all the potential in the world, but somehow couldn't get it done. A year from now, we may all be saying: How on earth could they have given up on Manny and a good player like Moss and a good young reliever like Hansen for Jason Bay? But that just goes to show you how dire the situation with Ramirez had become before the Sox shipped him to the Dodgers at the trade deadline today.

Fleeced? How could they be fleeced getting rid of that cancerous turd? Fair Market Value? He's worth no more than an injured Normar. Want him?

August 1, 2008  05:28 AM ET

Whoops, Nomar.

When Manny wants to play hard, like last year, he's great. He contributes. When he doesn't, like this year, he's a distraction. Manny being Manny. He helped win the WS last year. He chose not to this year. Boston is on the right road without him. They may not make it this year, but at least they have players that will play hard every day. I wish Manny luck. He'll probably be on his best behavior for a while, but not for long.

August 1, 2008  05:40 AM ET

Fleeced? No, but they did have to overpay to get rid of him and get the needed addition by subtraction.

Bay is not as good as Manny, but he is a capable player and signed for next year as well.

August 1, 2008  06:01 AM ET

Manny will look stupid next year when he can't even get the 20 million he would have received if he'd just played hard this year. Who's going to give a four year 80 to 100 million dollar contract to a 37 year old outfielder who'd been known to go on a work stoppage if he's no longer happy with the contract he signed?

Manny isn't the HOF offensive monster anymore. He's going to learn this over the next 8 months. Good! He needs to learn it after his terrible selfish display this year. How bad did it have to be for the Sox to give up two promising players just to be rid of him?

Duh, look at you, you can ridicule a 10 year old for being happy.

August 1, 2008  06:27 AM ET

Maybe Manny can stay with Texiera at Boras' L.A. retreat home and they can bond as new memebers of the L.A. crowd?

August 1, 2008  06:43 AM ET

I bet tht 10 year old has a higher IQ than Manny

Dude, Chilax, I'm just sayin that that kid looks retarded. Jesus, can't I make fun of america's youth without being riticuled for no apparant reason.

Being the grandfather of a severely handicapped child I take exception to the use of the word retarded. And the kid does not look handicapped to me, just real happy. I also doubt that the vendors at the game he is at sell tape. But I will give you the IQ part.

August 1, 2008  07:27 AM ET

This is probably a case of addition thru subtraction.

August 1, 2008  07:31 AM ET

Not Fleeced at all, Moss is at best a utility outfileder and Hansen? all the potential to be an effective reliever but just not consistent.

As far as number Bay's and Manny's are pretty much equal, Can Bay take the pressure in Boston? thats to be determined.

In any Case Manny and Boras staged this whole thing so Manny could become a free agent at the end of the year and get his 4 year 100 million dollar contract that he wants, the red sox wouldve picked up the offer this year and next and at 37 or 38 nobody us going to give him 20+ mill a year.

Thank you Manny for everyhting youve done, we will miss youre home runs and rbi's, he quit on the team and the fans so he had to go. He will end up with one of the 2 NY teams next year, or maybe if he does good in LA the Dodgers would keep him around.

August 1, 2008  07:45 AM ET

With all the hot chicks at Dodgers games they had to go and post of pic of this kid? Where's Milano or Posh Spice at when you need them?

When did I say anything about the stadium selling the kid the tape?

August 1, 2008  07:49 AM ET

I think everyone wins in this deal. The Pirates get some good prospects. Red Sox get a good player and get rid of a great player who was a cancer to the team. The Dodgers get a great hitter. Win Win Win situation for everyone.
