Why Tennessee cut Williams

So much for Mike Williams making the most of a third opportunity. The Titans released him Thursday, adding another disappointing chapter to the once-heralded receiver's NFL career. "It was a combination of things we weren't getting from him. There were too many drops. We just didn't see improvement,'' Coach Jeff Fisher said. "He's had potential. He still has potential. Maybe he'll realize it someplace else.'' Despite losing roughly 30 pounds and getting into better shape earlier this offseason, Williams was unable to move very far into the receiver rotation. His conditioning and weight remained issues as training camp progressed. "It may be a message that coaches are serious, the organization is serious and they want people that are going to work and compete and take their jobs serious,'' linebacker Keith Bulluck said.

He really should have just stayed in school. In his freshman year they were comparing him to Randy Moss, now he's turning into Gilbert Brown LMAO.

CR, couldn't have said it better. At this point Mike Williams, had better hope the bengals call, because I don't know of another qb/ assistant coach / wr core that could mentor him better on how to make the jump to the NFL as a WR.

but he'd probably end up morphing into chris henry 2.0, so maybe it's best they don't call.

Wasn't there just a story like a month ago talking about him breaking out? I guess those double sessions ended that. What a bust.

August 1, 2008  08:17 AM ET

This was disappointing. He had tremendous upside and ended up washed-up. Waste of talent.

What with the Lions killing the career of the Wide Reciever? They have had several 1st rounders flop after they got thier hands on them. I still wonder about MegaTron.

kinda' sad ... ever since that one good year at USC ... it's been all downhill

August 1, 2008  08:34 AM ET

he is the one from USC isn't he?

August 1, 2008  08:38 AM ET

he is the example of why kids need to stay in school. at least have the education to fall back on. even if they don't graduate only a few classes away from a degree is better than a few years.

August 1, 2008  09:04 AM ET

i wish him good luck and i think he will find another team. All of this will serve him as an experience for years to come

August 1, 2008  09:32 AM ET

Tennessee...Williams....get it?

August 1, 2008  09:48 AM ET

i thought this guy was going to be an all-pro WR. that's why i'm not a NFL personell guy and just write little comments on an anonymous message board.

vaughn9

You make a good point, but when you have the opportunity to be a top 10 pick in teh NFL and make millions, how many people turn that down? He is more of an example that great college player does not equal great pro player. Some of the greatest players in history have come in late rounds not the first round. I dont' fault him for trying the waters . . . .like the saying goes "scared money don't make money" . . .

August 1, 2008  10:20 AM ET

Clown,
weight and conditioning----two thing he has 100% control over!! He is a professional athlete for god's sake. Get a freakin trainer, cook, something. Half the old crones in my area have "trainers"--you couldn't tell but honestly. How many WRs in college were not picked ahead of him and yet would have killed for this opportunity. I don't wish him well, I feel bad for the folks who invested time and effort in this POS

August 1, 2008  10:35 AM ET

yeah Hitman, but if he does noy have the sense to make that money grow he will be working in a Burger King in a few years. an education would let him realize that he is probally not qualified to handle that ammount of money.

August 1, 2008  10:43 AM ET

To be honest Vaughn9, most people aren't qualified to handle that amount of money, that is why you hire a financial planner. He might have continued his college degree while he was playing similar to Vince Carter. We assume he never went back, but we don't actually know if he did not complete his education.

Like i said, you have a point about staying and getting an educaction, but football is a violent sport, there is no guarantee that you will make it to the next play. Do you stay for 4 years and risk injury or a bad season, or do you leave when your stock is the highest?

August 1, 2008  10:47 AM ET

Once a few WR's get hurt, some team will sign him for the league minimun. Maybe he'll wake up and get with the program, otherwise it's Arena ball.

i thought the same thing and thats also why i am writing comments

August 1, 2008  11:22 AM ET

I have a feeling he knew he wasn't as good as the numbers he posted his freshman year so he took the money and ran!!

August 1, 2008  11:26 AM ET

Don't worry Mike - I hear the Giants might be needing a W.R. !!!
