Boras: I didn't force Manny trade

As the Dodgers welcomed Manny Ramirez to town Friday, agent Scott Boras strongly denied the suggestion that he had orchestrated the trade that led Ramirez out of Boston and into free agency this winter. "Manny did not hire me to get him traded," Boras said. The Dodgers acquired Ramirez at minimal cost, with the Boston Red Sox picking up the $7 million left on his contract and the Dodgers paying only the $1-million trade bonus, according to a source familiar with the negotiations who was not authorized to speak publicly about the deal.

Of course not. I'm sure that Boras' advice to Manny about where to go had nothing to do with the huge free agent contract he'll now get a chunk of in the off-season.

He was simply--and selflessly--looking after the best interests of his clients.

In other news, the moon is made of green cheese.

August 2, 2008  08:41 AM ET

maybe he didn't and maybe he did. But if the Red Sox picked up those options he gets bupkus. Now he gts his 10% or whatever the pct. is of any new negotiated monies. Just sort of curious in my mind.

Ya gott love that Curt Schilling though. This excerpt from the article:

"Schilling, appearing Thursday on Boston radio station WEEI, said he suspected Boras played a role in trying to force the Red Sox to trade the 36-year--old Ramirez.

'I think he's absolutely had a hand in this,' Schilling said. 'Scott Boras stands to make zero dollars if the Red Sox pick up Manny's options the next two years.'

Said Boras: 'I don't know Curt Schilling, other than the fact that, way back when in Philadelphia, he said signing J.D. Drew would be a huge mistake.' "

What was that about green cheese, now? ain't green cheese spoilt cheese.

August 2, 2008  08:48 AM ET

Exactly...his old agent would have gotten the payday from the options.

But to suggest that Boras was motivated by anything other than his client's happiness is nothing more than blasphemy.

In other news, if you sail over the horizon you will be eaten by serpents.

The reason I don't buy Boras orchestrating Manny's trade is it's very possible that Manny gets a worse contract next year when it's all said and done.

Would Manny keep his mouth shut if Boras orchestrated Manny's behavior and it cost Manny dollars? Can Boras afford players thinking he negotiates only for himself and not the player? What would baseball do anything about an agent telling his players to violate their contract? Those are huge risks for Boras.

I don't see Manny doing any better than the 20 million he could have received from Boston. He'll be 37 and wants a 4 year deal. Boston's out. I can't see the Yankees putting up with Manny's BS. Manny and Scioscia? I don't see that either. Who else is going to give declining 37 YO slugger 20 million? The Mets or Dodgers? Maybe; but, I don't see them giving him a four year 80 million dollar contract.

August 2, 2008  09:02 AM ET

I'll say this for Boras. He thought ahead with A-Rod's original contract. He timed the player options at the exact right age. Manny's original agent didn't think that far ahead.

August 2, 2008  09:04 AM ET

Whew! I thought for a minute we would have a Manny thread today.

August 2, 2008  09:05 AM ET

wouldn't. Wouldn't have a Manny thread. I'll go get my coffee now.

August 2, 2008  09:06 AM ET

If Manny stayed and Boston exercised its options, Boras would have gotten NONE of it. Manny's old agent would have gotten the commission.

So the only way for Boras to get any payday from Manny is for Manny to get traded and become a free agent. Nice how it all worked out for Scotty, huh?

Manny will be a DH. Nobody is going to pay him big bucks to loaf around in LF.

August 2, 2008  09:06 AM ET

BoSox in trouble.

August 2, 2008  09:08 AM ET

The Sox are better off with a happy Bay than a petulant Ramirez. Manny quit on them a month ago; he was going to do everything he could to drag this team down if he stayed.

They lanced the boil.

August 2, 2008  09:20 AM ET

64 I'm sure Boras didn't discourage Manny. I don't think Manny needed any encouragement, and Boras encouraging him would be extremely risky for a man in his position. Teams already hate dealing with him. They might start refusing to deal with him completely if he encouraged his player to violate their contract the way Manny did.

name a team that doesnt want to unload Scott Boras clients.

August 2, 2008  09:22 AM ET

the whole front -page of T&R about manny.....a life of its own

August 2, 2008  09:37 AM ET

pw - Boston doesn't mind Boras clients. Let's see what happens. Boras is in trouble if he loses Boston as a client.

I don't know that encouraging Manny to seek a trade qualifies as telling him to violate his contract.

He says to Boras, "I don't like it here and I want to be a free agent." Boras says, "Maybe you'd be happier somewhere else."

Just talk between an agent and his client.

August 2, 2008  09:48 AM ET

Boras-
why even deny it..........

I firmly believe Manny is a moron- great hitter- but dumb as a rock.
could this have been all manny's doing- sure-
but you are guilty by association and REPUTATION.
- if you are denying it- you are essentiall throwing manny under the bus-
great job

August 2, 2008  09:51 AM ET

I think we agree on what happened.

He didn't discourage Manny from misbehaving.
