Griffey, Cincy end chilly relationship

it turned out to be a very poor match between Ken Griffey Jr., a private superstar, and Cincinnati, his adoring hometown. Griffey never really felt at home in the place he grew up. When he was traded to the Chicago White Sox on Thursday, few tears were shed in the city where he learned that short, sweet swing. On a number of levels, the relationship never worked, turning out to be more bitter than sweet. The city was expecting to see a lot of Griffey's smiling face and his affable Junior persona when he arrived. Instead, Griffey, a very private person away from the field, appeared overwhelmed by the outpouring. The never-ending attention lasted for most of that first season. Griffey pulled back, creating a chill in the relationship. Then, injuries did him in. During his second season in Cincinnati, Griffey tore a hamstring. That was just the start. In the next few years, he spent more time overcoming injuries -- torn patella tendon, torn hamstrings, dislocated shoulder, torn ankle, dislocated toe -- than hitting homers.

I don't want to start trouble-
but I don't know wht cincy fans are so weepy about Griffey leaving.....

I know he grea up there & was a 'clean' player-
But he was injury prone his whole stint there,
the team did nothing (except regress) his time there,
& he said himself that he didn't care about winning as much as being comfy

And when he goes into the hall- it will be in a Mariners cap- not cincy

cutting ties with his was a GREAT move for the franchise-

I think the bigger question with Junior is, "Where does he end up this winter?" Tampa would be a good guess. Maybe the Dodgers? They sign a centerfielder every winter.

I for one am not happy that he is now playing for the White Sox and healthy to boot.

I think if I'm a Cincy fan and management I'm glad to see the oft-injured under achieving old man Griffey go !!! "Adieu Junior" !!!

August 2, 2008  12:02 PM ET

I am a Reds fan and lifelong Cincinnati resident. We are NOT upset, mad, angry, disappointed or frustrated with Griffey in any way. Sure, a very small amount of media and unreasonable fans want to place blame. But THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY wish Griffey nothing but the best and we hope he gets a shot at a ring because he deserves it. NOW THAT'S HOW MOST CINCINNATI FANS FEEL. PLEASE DONT BELEIVE THIS B.S.!!!

Hey what's this Griffey story doing in the Manny section....it's almost as bad as the Farve section.....

Hope he gets his ring. JR deserves a shot at one. Sorry to see him leave Cincy though =(

August 2, 2008  02:07 PM ET

A Ring? Why on earth would anyone think his is going to get a ring? Just how disillusioned are people? This team is probably not even going to the playoffs. If it does it won't get far against other AL playoff teams. There's a very good reason why Cincinnati was so eager to get rid of Griffey. It was no coincidence.

"There's a very good reason why Cincinnati was so eager to get rid of Griffey. It was no coincidence."

really? its called money. what the small market teams don't have. and the reason MLB has been reduced to a 4-6 team league. 16.5 million for next season wasn't something the reds could swing.

August 2, 2008  02:55 PM ET

Exactly. Why would the Reds want to pay 16.5 million for another season of such meager production? They have been so angry with him for years with his injuries and lack of production now they have ran him out of town like a Leper. As far as the Reds ownership is concerned this trade came seven years too late. Now the same people wish he would get a ring? He was supposed to help bring home a ring for Cincinnati!!

You have it all wrong Dusty...

August 2, 2008  03:40 PM ET

Then please explain

August 2, 2008  03:57 PM ET

The Reds are paying all of Griffey's contract this year and if the Sox decide to keep him next year they will pay half of the 16mil, also the Reds agree to pay the whole 4mil buyout if the Sox decide not to use the option.
