Signs that Sundin may retire

Mats Sundin is seriously contemplating retirement and there is growing suspicion among hockey insiders in Sweden the 37-year-old will walk away from the game. That is why today's "soft deadline" for Sundin to announce his plans will pass without any clear indication of whether the star centre will suit up this season. "He's just trying to decide if he's going to play or not. On the face of it, that's the issue," said his agent, J.P. Barry, after speaking with the long-time Maple Leaf captain yesterday. "The longer that takes I guess ... increases the possibility of him not playing." While Sundin has remained mum on his future, observers in Sweden say his actions speak loudly. For about the past 15 years, Sundin has been the organizer of informal summer skates among NHL players based in Sweden. Those workouts are set to begin Aug. 11 at the Globen Arena. Normally, this is when Sundin would be working the phones, making sure his countrymen know about the available ice. This summer, however, that task has fallen to someone else and Sundin, though he is in Stockholm, isn't expected to attend. "He's not working out. It doesn't seem like he plans to, he's just golfing," said one source. Barry said the retirement possibility.

Baaaah, I'm sick and tired of all the Sundin stories, but I seriously hope he doesn't retire...

I think he might feel a bit cheated by the Leafs' organization. Sure, he hasn't won anything with Toronto, but he's played his heart out on a team that never was really close to a Cup and lately he's been playing with mediocre players at best.. then they ask him to waive his NTC and now he's getting all kinds of bashing because he din't want to jump the ship.

I too would seriously consider retirement, as it doesn't seem like the Leafs are as loyal to him, as he is/was to them.

Just retire old man!!!!!!

You will not win a cup! You have been a loyal player to an organization that has not been committed to winning since your grandpa's youth.

Keep golfing, enjoy your life and eat lot's of swedish meatballs!

Forsberg will be so jealous!

IKEA rules!

You're absolutely right, Dashiva, that Leafs are not as loyal to Mats as he was for them for so many years. I'm curious if any offer he reveived comes from a true contender.

I could wile away the hours
Conferrin' with the flowers
Consultin' with the rain
And my head I'd be scratchin'
While my thoughts were busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain ..............Mats the Scarecrow Sundin.

August 2, 2008  11:27 AM ET

That would be just dandy !!!

August 2, 2008  12:44 PM ET

BGM...so you would take Neely over Thornton huh?

August 2, 2008  01:12 PM ET

It would be better if Sundin retires. The leaf fans won't feel so cheated that way.

Sundin to the Jackets!!!

Sundin, please report to the set for Lord of the Rings part IV. We need to use you as the stunt double for that troll, Gollum, for the the frozen river scene.

Enjoy golfing. I don't think he'll be back or he'll chose a "pre-retirement team in the sun" LA, Florida, etc...
Did someone notice, the classy quietness of Joe Sakic. Sundin is golfing, contemplating retirement, not skating in Sweden, consider $10 MIL from the Canucks.... I bet you Captain Joe is just working hard for camp instead.

cmh_phx, I don't want to ruin anything for you, but Sundin has said just about as much as Joe Sakic about his future. It's the media writing stories.

What about Sundin's agent leaking stories to try and keep the trade-value high?
And please don't tarnish the great Joe Sakic by comparing him to Sundin.

Well that is his agent, isn't it? And I'm not comparing Joe Sakic to Mats Sundin or anyone, but I'm **** sick and tired of all the Sundin-bashing. He's done nothing but play his heart out for an organization who obviously doesn't love him back. And for that he gets **** from the fans.

Yeah, I'm tired of all the Sundin stories as well, but bash the journalist in the case, not Sundin.

Signs the fans dont care anymore.
This "update" was posted 24 hours ago and 19 people have commented on it.Please god no more until this is over.Even Favre has made up his dam mind!!!

I think Dashiva has a good point here. It's the agents that are to blame. I don't recall Sundin making any statement himslef. Joe's agent does not need to maintain the story hot because Joe probably does not want to play for the Avs and might even take a cut to help their salary cap situation if needed. The Leafs do not want Sundin as much as The Avs want Sakic.

BGM...so you would take Neely over Thornton huh?
Baun-ded

Only somebody with less than 2 active brain cells wouldn??t

August 4, 2008  08:00 AM ET

Don't care? This has been going on for at least a season.

August 4, 2008  08:03 AM ET

No not Neely over Thornton...the where is Sundin going issue..which team and etc? How long will he play?

August 4, 2008  08:07 AM ET

And Mike, they mean Scott Thornton. A winger...that is right keep doing research on Neely among current NHL players. That will keep you busy.

Some people read this stuff but will not post but will write to me so I can look like I have a personality disorder when I answer them.
