Smith punches another Panther

Volatile wide receiver Steve Smith punched cornerback Ken Lucas during a sideline altercation at Friday morning's practice at Wofford College, leaving Lucas' left eye bloodied and swollen. Smith, who was kicked out of practice, has been sent home to Charlotte for disciplinary reasons, coach John Fox told Carolina Growl. Fox said Lucas is also in Charlotte receiving medical treatment. According to several eyewitness, the two teammates were on the sidelines discussing a play that happened previously at camp and Smith wound up slugging Lucas while the cornerback was resting on one knee. A scuffle ensued and punches were thrown as teammates and Fox charged in to break up the fight. Linebacker Jon Beason had to pull Smith away from Lucas. It took several people to restrain the men and restore order. Shortly after the fight Smith came over, with Muhsin Muhammad and another coach by his side, and tried to reconcile with Lucas. The two men briefly exchanged a hug. Smith, who seemed upset by the incident, then walked over and talked to friend John Kasay, who has helped him through some tough times in the past. "Steve was probably a little remorseful for what happened and was trying to apologize," Muhammad said. The incident resurrects reminders of Smith's much-publicized film room attack on former teammate Anthony Bright in 2002. Smith took exception to something Bright said in the film room and began throwing punches, damaging Bright's face. Bright later pressed charges against Smith but a civil suit was settled out of court. Smith was suspended one game for that attack. There has been some bad blood between Smith and Lucas in the past, although they've never come to blows.

One day he is going to swing at the wrong person (maybe an offensive lineman) and is going to get thumped. Nothing against the Panthers, but suspend him without pay.

Punchy guy, but can he hit?

Careful what you wish for, he'd probably wind up on the cowgirls. Although, he doesn't have a criminal record, so maybe not.

There is comfort in numbers.
