Wilken's arrogance stuns owner

Sonics owner Clay Bennett removed Lenny Wilkens from his title as team president after just six weeks, returning Wilkens to a vice chairman and consultant role. Wilkens believed he could replace Rick Sund as the GM, but he was intrigued when he and Bennett discussed the team presidency. However, Wilkens' salary request stunned Bennett, according to club sources. Wilkens wants more and believes he deserves more. It was perhaps that confidence -- or arrogance -- that irritated Bennett the past few months, when it was apparent Wilkens wasn't satisfied with his vice chairman role.

What is shocking to Seattle residents is the arrogance and classlessness exhibited by Bennett. Dismissing a Coach over the phone who was in a recovery room from surgery. telling people in Kansas City he would bring the sonics their the day they get the number two pick in the draft. Showing up in Olympia to demand a new stadium and not even having an idea of cost or a plan to finance it. etc etc.

Bennett seems to be trying to do everything he can to deflate any movement on keeping the Sonics in Seattle. By making himself so disagreeable and obnoxious he is guaranteeing he gets what he wants. A $500,000,000 team in a $100.00 City in Oklahoma.

Ok, enough is enough....I don't personally care about all the politicing over where a team ends up. As an Oklahoman I would really rather keep the Hornets anyway. What is continually making me as angry as any time in my life is this CONSTANT cut down of Oklahoma City. I think it is disgusting and totally not called for. Between the good people of Seattle and the Denver Nuggets head coach and Charles Barkley I am sick of it. Most of you people who cut us down have never even been here probably. We may not be the most cosmopolitan happening place but we are a good people and OKC is a VERY VERY good place to live and raise a family. We are a very sports crazed city and state and have proven for the past 2 years that we are definately an NBA city. Most of the Hornets people are choosing to keep their homes they bought here because they truly LIKED living here. They truly loved the community and the people here. So in closing I would suggest that you critics of a city you most likely have never set foot in, come on down and check us out. Hey we are even good enough now to have about 30 Starbucks in the city. If anything, that should make your visit even better than it would be. Not that we need it to be a cool city. Maybe you all should stop being so elitist and snobish and accept that Seattle isn't the only good place to be in the USA!!!!

I think people are missing the point. Lenny Wilkins sucks! this is coming from a Toronto fan who saw what he almost did to this franchise. The smartest thing to do is remove him from the Sonics completely. He's cancerous.

A few years ago, SI the Magazine did a year long weekly series on the states regarding sports. The OK citizen survey put OK in the middle of the state pack sports-wise. OK people did not realize how sports crazed they really were in comparison to the rest of the nation. When the NBA moved in and thrived after "folks" said that it would not work. OK realized they are sports-crazed and a big-time city. I am an Oklahoma transplant and proud of it. The comment about $100.00 City in Oklahoma is ridiculous. OKC and OK, in general, are great places.

As for comments relavent to the article: 1) Bennett is clearly trying to get the Sonics out of Seattle and his act may make it happen. Or Bennett is dumb and doesn't know how to get what he wants. 2) Wilkens needs to retire from the Sonics front office, because he is no longer effective. Hiring Sam Presti as general manager was a very good move by the Sonics. It suggests that Bennett is not so dumb. ;)

Wilkins might be bad for the Sonics, but the worse thing is Bennet. He is so set on moving the team now that he has lost all support in Seattle. The second worse thing is the Washington House of Reps who can't seem to realize that sports isn't only about money, but about the city around it. No offense to OKC, but the Seattle Super Sonics moving to Oklahoma City might be one of the worst things that could happen to the NBA in a time where television ratings are so low. Oh and the fabricated attendance numbers are just funny, how it set last years record, which set broke the year before that record. The NBA just needs to spit it out that they are falling behind the NFL and even the lowley MLB with all of its problems.

Oh and if we are measuring how many starbucks a city has to make it great you are just crazy. Because Seattle has starbucks on every block. A few even have 3 starbucks on them. So lets not use stupid statistics to measure how sophisticated a city is. Thank You.

Clay Bennett's goal is obvious to move the team to OKC. OKC is probably a nice place, but why steal Seattle's team? Clay is trying everything to torpedo any good news that might get a new arena built. The Muckleshoot tribe is willing to talk, but Clay can't drive a half-hour South of Seattle to check out the opportunity while he's in town announcing Sam Presti as the new GM. The NBA in Seattle is a no-brainer, why would you give up a market area that ranks around 13 in major cities for one that probably won't crack the top 50. Clay's smokin' crack if he thinks OKC is better than Seattle for the Sonics.
