Cuban leading chase for Cubs

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has gone from being a long shot to one of the favorites in the bidding to buy the Cubs, picking up support from NBA Commissioner David Stern and others as the field of prospective owners narrows. Crain's Chicago Business recently quoted one of the bidders as saying Cuban is now "the lead guy" in the battle to buy the Cubs, while Boston Red Sox owner John Henry said in an e-mail to the New York Times that he could think of "no one better suited to reverse the fortunes of the Cubs for the long term" than Cuban. While a Cubs official denied any of the remaining bidders is leading the pack, saying "we're still at the starting gate" in the process, it's apparent Cuban is gaining support in his bid to purchase the club after most figured he never would pass muster with MLB owners.

I hope this happens. Cuban's Mavericks haven't won a title yet, but he turned them around, making them competitive and a first-class organization. Baseball's old guard could use a little kick in the seat.

As long as he cranks out the dough this will be a good thing.

August 3, 2008  09:25 AM ET

If he aquires the Cubs he wil be treated like a freaking rock star in Chicago. That scares me a bit, however.

August 3, 2008  09:42 AM ET

i agree with tell it like it is if he aquires the cubs nothing but good can come from it i would love to see how he does in mlb

August 3, 2008  09:52 AM ET

I just don't want to see him turn into Darth Vader turning the Cubs into the Evil Empire. Buy hey, that's probably better than what they've always been. No, actually it IS better than what they've always been. I'M IN!!

August 3, 2008  10:30 AM ET

I really hope this happens. Cuban would be perfect for the Cubbies.

August 3, 2008  11:03 AM ET

If he can make winners of my beloved Cubs, and do it without signing idiots like Manny or Bonds, then I'm all for it! Go Cubs!!!

August 3, 2008  11:27 AM ET

This would be the best thing to happen to my Cubbies. Cuban apeals to the younger generation of Cubs fans here in Chicago. Everyone I know wants him here. Think of what he did with the Mavs. They were a bottom of the league team before he came in and turned them into a powerhouse. Imagine what he could do with a team thats already a powerhouse...Cuban buy this team, I'll even spot you a sawbuck if you need it!

August 3, 2008  12:11 PM ET

Yeah Bulls, he is not afraid to spend money. And he is certainly entertaining. Of course, if the Cubs win the series this year it would ruin everything for him.

August 3, 2008  12:22 PM ET

but like... the cubs ARENT at the bottom of the league.

August 3, 2008  12:47 PM ET

he is a very good, but not great owner. he will spend, respect the players, turn over every stone to improve the teams lot. He will however always be 2 feet away and crowd the team and the on the field process a bit. If I were a cubs fan though, I'd definitely want him. as a mavs fan this may be another outlet that will make our situation a bit more healthy.

Can't Wait for his 7th inning stretch rendition of "take me out to the ball game."

August 3, 2008  01:21 PM ET

I think he would be great for MLB. These dinosaur owners and Bud take way too long to make a change even when it's obvious (ex. instant replay, drug testing). Mark Cuban is new money whose do it now attitude will be the infusion of youth and catalyst for progress sorely needed!

August 3, 2008  01:33 PM ET

He could do scary things in Chicago!!! GO CUBS!

August 3, 2008  01:47 PM ET

Will that human trash will fit just right in in Shitago.

Chicago is one of the finest cities in the nation, and you're a jackass.

August 3, 2008  01:56 PM ET

He's also been reported.

"If he aquires the Cubs he wil be treated like a freaking rock star in Chicago"

He already thinks he is.

Bye Bye Wrigley Field if Cuben buys the Cubs. That monument is falling apart. I love the cubs but the stadium has to be updated, "torn down".

August 3, 2008  06:02 PM ET

Why does it have to be torn down? Because it is selling out every single game? Do not kid yourself. The Cubs have it made sitting right where they are located, and they know it. Don't look for that to change anytime soon. The Sox can stay in the slums.
