Yzerman, Nieuwendyk on retirement

Steve Yzerman and Joe Nieuwendyk were forced into retirement by injuries and never really had to wrestle with the decision about when to call it a career. So when they see players like Mats Sundin or Joe Sakic struggling to make up their minds, they have one simple piece of advice. "If there's any doubt and guys aren't sure, I think they should be playing," Yzerman told The Canadian Press on Friday. "You can be retired for the rest of your life. You'll know when you're done. "If you're not 100 per cent certain that you don't want to play anymore, then the decision is that you should be playing." Added Nieuwendyk: "People always told me: 'Play as long as you can.' I think these guys you're talking about still have some good years left in them."

These two great players had the misfortune of not leaving the game on their own terms...guys like Sakic and Sundin are still healthy and have at least a couple good years left.Sakic will likely play out his career with the Av's...Sundin,on the other hand...it is anyone's guess where he will end up.

Agreed, TT. I'm glad that somebody finally said this. All we ever hear is that it's better to retire too early than too late. BS. I'd rather watch a guy give it everything he has, even if he doesn't have the skill anymore, just to see if he can still do it. Very few people can go out on top the way John Elway did. Play until you can't play or don't want to play anymore, but if there's any doubt about retirement, then come back for another season.

Two classy guys who speak because they love the game.

I wonder what advise they have for Peter Neved on retirement?

BostonGM, how about Cam Neely being under there? :)

August 3, 2008  06:22 PM ET

Human nature is very complex - who knows, maybe Cam Neely's deepest secret has just been unveiled?

Just kidding - Stevie would never let any male be under there!!!

Steve Y. is a legend, another thing we'll never know is if he would have played the following season if the Idiotic Bettman did not cancel the season. He has ruined the NHL to some degree, at least in the states, ESPN dropped the NHL after the strike and that killed the NHL exposure in America. Versus is atrocious overall. I used to live in Toronto and of course hockey coverage is great in Canada, I have lived in Anaheim for the past 20 years and the popularity of the sport is not there even after the Ducks got lucky beating Detroit to get to the finals in 2007, Love how the Wings beat the team that knocked out the Ducks in the first round. If hockey gets more coverage in the States then we will see more fans. You guys and your uncalled for jokes about Cam Neely and Steve Yzerman are a waste of time. Cam Neely another stud, love how he nail ULF Sameulson after that dirty hit in the 1991 playoffs. Vancouver must have almost killed themselves for trading him and a 1st round pick(Glen Wesley) for Barry Pederson. At least when the Canucks traded Pederson they got something for him. Neely, Gary Roberts, Brendan Shanahan, Rick Tochet and Keith Tkchuck(not sure of the spelling) but these guys could fight with anyone and play hockey as well. Love these type of players. I left out a few like Mark Messier, even Bob Probert for at least one season, in 87-88, over 300 penalty minutes and 29 goals, I know Probert was a fighter for the most part but people forget about the 87-88 season.

Go WIngs lets see another repeat.

A colleague of mine once advised me on retirement, "You'll know when you are ready!"

If guys like Sundin or Sakic don't know for sure if they are ready, they should not retire. To move to another sport, look at Favre in the NFL for the case of a player who retired before he knew he was ready.

Always liked how Stevie acted after scoring, just raising a hand, not like some of these players jumping into the glass, or pumping their fist after scoring when they're down three goals or more

August 4, 2008  03:11 AM ET

Stevie did once keep jumping after potting a goal - and it was a PERFECT reaction concerning the importance of that goal (that famous 1996 goal in the 2nd overtime of Game 7 against St.Louis)

HYPER BRAD,
You left out Avery
And you're right, we don't just need more coverage, we need REAL coverage
Versus is better than nothing I guess
At least I don't have to listen to Clement McGuire and Milbury every game.
Engblom's pretty good
And thank goodness Darren Pang is gone too

BETTMAN S***S

Appleseed Turtleland

if there's anything more annoying than the Sundin thingy, it's Favre. Who cares?
I think he is making a HUGE mistake coming back. He doesn't have it anymore

Joe Sakic will be back. Matts Sundinn .... who cares!
