Goodell to mediate Steelers sale

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will arrange a meeting among the five Rooney brothers within the next few weeks to help mediate the possible ownership change in the Steelers. Goodell called the meeting after former commissioner Paul Tagliabue -- who has been working as a consultant on the matter -- briefed him on the state of ownership talks, he told reporters at the Pro Football Hall of Fame ceremonies in Canton, Ohio. Some of the brothers want to sell and they've lined up a buyer, billionaire Stanley Druckenmiller, who is willing to acquire a controlling interest in the club but has no interest in minority ownership. Steelers chairman Dan Rooney has made two offers to his brothers that were rejected and recently made a third, according to a family source, that is being considered. The brothers have been trying over the past two years to find a way to abide by NFL rules regarding ownership of their racetrack-casinos, as well as the Steelers. NFL rules forbid team owners to be involved in any kind of casino gambling.

I'd have to go with Dan first and foremost, he is the man. But Druckenmiller has said he will never move the team so it sounds like a win-win situation for the City and the team.

Lets hope he can mediate this one faster and better than he did the Packers vs Favre circus. It did not look he did much if anything for that problem except to prolong it. Last year Roger seemed decisive and on point. This year...

How will he have time when he is playing G.M. for the Packers and the Brett Favre thing.

It just occured to me, but why wouldn't the NFL allow for the Pittsburgh community to "Buy" into the franchise. I think every person would be willing to buy 10 shares of the Steelers, even if it cost $5000. You would be able to sell that 49% of the team for 2 or 3x as much as from a single buyer or group of buyers because people won't care if they are paying too much. They will walk around saying, I own a little part of the Steelers!

If you sold the 49% for 1 billion, which is nearly 2x what it is worth, that would be 2,000,000 shares at $500 per. There is a lot of stupid money in PA, from truck drivers, to steel workers, to union employees. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they would have that demand in PA alone, and with the Steelers they have such a national following, they could easly have 5 million people interested in buying shares.

If they Cowboys were to do this, I would be ok with throwing some expendable cash at it, not for an investment, but because I love the Cowboys.

Nice idea jdramirez, but unfortunately it would not be possible as that idea is expressly forbidden by NFL bylaws'

The Packers are the only team that has something like that happening and they are operating under a grandfather clause. There will be no further examples of that in the NFL...

jdramirez-

Lots of stupid money in PA? Are you insane? Pittsburghers are middle class, frugal and obsessed with financial stability. $5000 (if that is your valualtion of 10 shares, might as well be $500) is a lot of money to Pittsburghers. It might be 15-20% of someone's annual income. I agree that there is a strong union presense in Pittsburgh. There always has been. But Pittsburgh unions are less concerned with wage increases and liquid benefits as they are with long term intangibles, like better health care, college stipends etc etc.

Five grand a buttload of money to the average Pittsburgher. Any self-respecting Pittsburgher would spit on a petition to pledge that sort of loot to the Steelers. I don't care how rabid we are as fans. Money is money.
