FBI agent: NBA ref charges true

The man who put away John Gotti, baby-sat Sammy (Bull) Gravano, raided an Al Qaeda bomb factory and helped uncover the NBA betting scandal says Tim Donaghy told the truth. Philip Scala, the recently retired FBI supervisory special agent in charge of the Gambino squad, which uncovered Donaghy's scheme of betting on basketball games he had officiated, said he believes the disgraced referee's claims that other refs were dirty. Scala said he was not merely offering his opinion of the disgraced referee, rather it was his informed assessment of his credibility after his unit - officially known as C-16 - conducted an exhaustive investigation.

Someone will be sleepin with the fishes like Luca Brazzi...

We have not heard the end of this story. When the truth is revealed, perhaps David Stern will be taken down. A full scale investigation should have been launched at the beginning of Donaghy's accusations. Stern chose to play it off as someone attempting to gain a lighter sentence.

this stern guy is a joke lets just sweep everything under the carpet
of course more officials were involved

August 3, 2008  01:46 PM ET

David Stern is trying to protect his sport, but he did it the wrong way. Internal invesigations very rarly expose any wrongdoing. Baseball did it and found nothing and then an other investigation ie...Mitchell exposed a can of worms.
Stern needs to quit blaming one guy and check this out more seriously.

August 3, 2008  02:32 PM ET

If the investigation shows other refs are dirty, then why don't they (FBI &/or the NBA) do something about it?

August 3, 2008  03:17 PM ET

Do you really think the NBA Ref problem is only a basketball problem....just like steriods are only a baseball problem?

August 3, 2008  05:37 PM ET

Stern is definetely covering something up. it has been said for years that refs have been helping certain teams, or that the NBA wanted to see certain teams in the finals. The entire credibility of the league would be gone if it came out that more NBA refs were involved. Who would want to continue watching the product if they found out that for years refs had been making certain calls for their benefit?

August 3, 2008  05:54 PM ET

I've got too say that this is devestating for the NBA. The FBI is probably the most secure, watch every step you take, organization in the world. They don't try you, unless they will convict you (unless you kill a witness, or tamper with the jury). Secondly, someone this high up would not make false claims, about an on going investigation, or a recently finished investigation. That opens up way too many possible lawsuits for the NBA. Long story short, this is terrible for the NBA, and one day it will come out that games are being rigged, either by mobsters or the commissioner himself.

All the other leagues should take note of this and start doing some housecleaning themselves.

August 3, 2008  06:29 PM ET

It's far time for Stern to go. He is too old, too far removed from reality, and clearly morally compromised to be an effective Commissioner.

August 3, 2008  08:42 PM ET

This is really bad. However, are we really sure that Stern is at fault here? In my opinion, this could have happened under any commissioner's jurisdiction.

August 3, 2008  08:51 PM ET

The NBA doesn't have a big enough broom to sweep this under the rug. This is some dirty laundry, and it may get really ugly.

August 3, 2008  08:52 PM ET

By the way, check out the picture to the right here. It's Steve Smith doing the only thing he does better than catch a football.

August 3, 2008  09:28 PM ET

It may be the truth and even if it is I will still love the NBA as much as I did before the scandal because the best teams can overcome the refs in a sport like basketball so the refs can't really decide the outcome of a game 100% of the time

August 3, 2008  10:52 PM ET

I am still reluctant to believe that wholesale rigging is going on, although this story causes pause. I agree that "internal investigations" rarely uncover dirty work and am suspicious of any attempt at an internal investigation in any context

August 3, 2008  10:56 PM ET

A couple of addicts in stripes is bad anyway you look at. Even if only one is involved, it's obviously one to many as they say.

For anyone in doubt of ref. complicity in games, the Mavericks/Heat series should have been an eye opener. The Stern guy threw all his might at Mark Cuban for challenging his (Stern's) authority and the mavericks lost through questionable foul calls. In Nigeria, we cal that "Man pass man". David Stern is a Nigerian with white pigmentation.

I will never understand why our culture is so afraid of the truth. We shield our children from it, our bosses, our lovers, ourselves... **** is wrong with America!?! While it's fair that Tim Donaghy bears the burden for his part in this, hopefully people will stop piling on after the fact. Especially given the fact that the N.B.A. is more than likely just as culpable. They took a very public dump on Tim Donaghy, so I'd call it poetic justice that they be exposed for the frauds that they are.

Wow! They block "W - T - F" (just the letters) on fannation. Lord have mercy. This is just what I'm talking about.

I wonder how long it will take to uncover all the truth and nothing but the truth. Man i need to go watch some Jack Nichalson in A few Good Men.
