Paterno ponders QB battle

Penn State begins preseason practice Monday seeking the answer to the question that no less an authority than coach Joe Paterno considers at the top of his list: Who will be the Nittany Lions' quarterback? Leading candidates to succeed Anthony Morelli are Daryll Clark, a senior who could have this and one more season of eligibility remaining; and redshirt sophomore Pat Devlin, although Paterno insists on including the third-teamer -- senior Paul Cianciolo -- in any discussions. Clark, who played some versus Texas A&M in the Alamo Bowl, is the favorite, with Devlin his close challenger. Paterno has said often in recent weeks that he had been urged by his son, quarterbacks coach Jay, to get Clark into games earlier in the season as a change of pace.

"Pappa" Joe has that HGH thing going for him. Just hanging around to try and last long enough to make up that 1 game lead of Mr. Bowden.

Hey Joe, thanks for getting some of your QB's some throwing experience from last year. That might have been helpful, instead of your stupid loyality to senors who can't get the job done.

August 3, 2008  10:21 PM ET

It's going to be Clark. Seniority has the edge over performance in Joes system.

Any of these guys will be better than Morelli.

If Clark is as good as Robinson was, we might run the schedule this year.

August 3, 2008  11:46 PM ET

Don't worry, fellow Staters, we're in good hands whomever lines up under center: Jay Paterno is the coach (last name coincidence only). He will develop this next QB with the same expertise he's used to develop all the Heisman finalists, Unitas finalists, O'Brien finalists, Pro prospects, and Big Ten QBs of the year.

Uh, sorry, I just woke up. It was all a dream: Steve Sarkisian did NOT leave USC and come to PSU, after all. We're doomed.

(Is there another school in the country that keeps a ooach who goes 0-9 against a conference foe?)

Really? You actually thin you can make it through the Big 10 undefeated? You wont even beat Michigan!

August 4, 2008  04:19 PM ET

^Yes, I do and we will beat Michigan this year.

The Buckeyes won't have Morelli to throw them touchdown passes this year, you should be worried. I'm betting either PSU or MSU beats Ohio State this year.

Joe is really pondering how big his nose is.

The plan is simple. Listen to what Jay says. Do the opposite. Win games.
