Longhorns try two-QB attack

Somehow, some way, Texas wants to regularly have Colt McCoy and John Chiles on the field at the same time this season. As the Longhorns begin preseason practice today, Mack Brown and his staff are formulating a plan to best utilize UT's top two quarterbacks. McCoy remains the unquestioned No. 1 after throwing for 5,873 yards and 51 touchdowns over the last two seasons. But Chiles, a sophomore from Mansfield Summit, possesses the type of big-play ability that could be a real asset to the Longhorns. Texas would like to use McCoy at quarterback and Chiles as something of a wild card -- running pass patterns, taking direct snaps, etc. UT tried the two together at times last season, but nothing jelled.

Looks like another college team who wants it both ways and can't commit to one person. How many times have we seen this before!

August 4, 2008  06:18 AM ET

McCoy needs to play better then he did last year.

August 4, 2008  08:28 AM ET

They're commited to McCoy, but John Chiles is a player you can't keep bottled up on the sideline. So they want to use their weapons and utilize talent that could help. It seems like Mack is finally ready to let his players loose like he did in the Holiday Bowl.

August 4, 2008  08:28 AM ET

Could/Should have tried that a long time ago with Jevon Snead.

Seriously, I think using two QBs or running a wild-hog formation is more difficult that it looks. You need really good talent.

When you have two QB's, you really have none...

The other day, on a thread about Tim Tebow, a couple of people were saying that McCoy, among others, was a better college QB than Tebow. When you're not even the clear favorite on your own team, you're probably NOT as good as the guy who just picked up the Heisman. I guess Mack Brown agreed. And for the record, I'm not a fan of either player.

August 4, 2008  11:49 AM ET

Maybe your eyes AREN'T so wide open... Colt is the clear starter, just like Chris Leak was the clear starter. Chiles will just play the role Tebow did as a freshman. And there was no reason to try this with Snead. He's the same level athlete as Colt, but Colt BEAT HIM OUT.

August 4, 2008  11:50 AM ET

At this time of the year it is prudent to work all of your QB's with the first team when possible. With McCoy's injury issues, it makes sense to work Chiles into the mix. The Jevon Snead move has not been a great loss, since Mack has been able to recruit replacements without much trouble. I would also have to agree that McCoy is not ae Tebow's level yet. .

I was on that thread and I for one don't think Tebow's that good. I think he's a product of a system and benefits from an offense that features him in the Red Zone (run/throw). Let's get one thing straight, Tebow is not playing with ducks, there's plenty of talent around him, especially on the O-Line. Let's not forget Alex Smith.

August 4, 2008  12:34 PM ET

The only way I can see this working is if they have a special package for John Chiles where can can either run the ball or throw it out of a shotgun setting, Kinda like Florida used Tebow at first.

August 4, 2008  12:49 PM ET

Texas and Mack Brown's best days are behind them...BANK ON IT!!!!!!!!!!

August 4, 2008  01:18 PM ET

I'm a Texas fan. I think Texas needs to scrap the "O" coord. I think this new "D" coord will be good for us, but some new blood is needed at the top of the offense. If they get enough time to tweak it, and if other teams can't prepare for it, then this two headed beast can be successful. It's hard to reinvent the game- to do what others can't adjust to. It worked with Vince, but that was with Vince. That kind of guy doesn't come around too often.
I'm glad to see five Big12 teams ranked 14 or better. That is great. I kind of wonder what they base my teams inclusion on. Seems like a lot of sources pick Texas to have a bad year. I think the Aggies will do well this year, and so will Tech. You'd think Oklahoma State's bulb would burn brighter with all of T. Boone's power. I can't wait for football season. This time of year is harder than any other for me.

Sorry Truth. After a statement like that, I don't care for the Truth anymore. **** the Truth. I will live my life in lies because ignorance is bliss, bit****!!!

August 4, 2008  01:22 PM ET

I agree with Suckubus. This time of year is hard on us. The political bickering of an election year makes it harder. We should have support groups for college football fans nationwide from June (after NBA playoffs) through August.

The Experience | 08/04/08, 11:49 AM

Maybe you should get some more "EXPERIENCE" watching college football. Leak was spelled in favor of Tebow in certain situations, because Tebow was BETTER than Leak in those situations. If McCoy was that good, he would be under center for EVERY situation. If McCoy had BEAT HIM OUT, then Chiles would be HOLDING A CLIPBOARD, not warming up waiting for McCoy to screw up, or get himself into a situation that HE CAN'T HANDLE.

BTW, arejay, Tebow is a system QB? Only if you mean he could dominate in ANY system. For the record, I CAN'T STAND TEBOW!!! I'm just willing to admit that he's the best QB in the college game right now... and it pains me to say that. Bottom line, IMO, McCoy is nowhere near Tebow's skill level, not even close.

August 4, 2008  03:23 PM ET

McCoy wil play much better than he did last year!!! Much Better!!!!

August 4, 2008  04:17 PM ET

eyesWIDE,

I understand your argument. Tebow better than McCoy. I don't think that should be a debate. Tebow could have started for a lot of programs from day one. Colt wasn't supposed to start at Texas, Ryan Perrilloux was, but he switched to LSU on Signing Day. The main thing is John Chiles is a weapon that should be used. Could you imagine your star recruit E.J. standing on the sidelines for 3 years behind the starter? Plus I think the fans turned the heat up on the coaching staff to use Chiles more after seeing what he could do.

August 4, 2008  04:53 PM ET

I've always wanted a team to try a 2 QB system on the field. For instance running option reverses to a guy who can throw the ball down the field accurately....or direct snap to a guy fake the run and pull back out and throw it deep. I think this will be the next big thing in college football.

August 4, 2008  05:39 PM ET

When you have two QB's, you have none....

THE TRUTH | 08/04/08, 10:05 AM

Correct. Name the last 2 QB system to win, NCAA or pro...and don't say Florida b/c that WAS NOT a 2 QB system...
