The first round of interviews for the Islanders' head-coaching vacancy should be completed by Tuesday, and then, general manager Garth Snow can take the next step toward naming a replacement for Ted Nolan. Former Los Angeles Kings coach Marc Crawford and current Islanders assistant Gerard Gallant are among the final candidates expected to be interviewed over the next three days, according to an NHL source. Snow has made it clear that he's seeking a long-term partner willing to focus on developing a contender by playing the young prospects and building through the draft.

Long term? Hire Beaves and Butthead! Or, Dumb and Dumber!

Wanted: SWM seeking LTR with GWM. Ask for Garth.

They just fired Crawford in LA because he wasn't good with the young players he had there...Now he is going to be the long term coach to deal with prospects? keep trying Garth..one of these days you may get it.

Coaches are not the problem, S*T*U*P*I*D!!!

August 4, 2008  12:36 PM ET

This is why you should never make your backup Goalie your GM.

Marc Crawford won't last more than a couple of years no matter where he goes. He is a pretty good coach, but he has kinda been blacklisted since the Bertuzzi incident. Any hint of desperado in him and he'll be gone. If they want a long term answer, they better hire Gallant. He is obviously committed to the team if he wants the job after seeing how they did Nolan.

And catching up to NASCAR, I hope

Yes, that is what I am referring to. It's going to be huge, will go on for months. Compared with the Sundin and Favre threads, it's going to make the Titanic look like a rowboat.

Will Jimmy Connors send a gift, I wonder

August 4, 2008  03:25 PM ET

Yes, he, John Lloyd, Cliff Richard and Andy Mills are going to all chip in and buy it an aquarium.
BTW, I predict this baby will look a lot like Evertonius's Avatar. With fins.

I ask again... how do you build a team through the draft and be a contender at the same time? Either you rebuild, or you contend for the cup, not both.

Garth Snow is one stupid bloke.

August 4, 2008  05:04 PM ET

Problem: Isles want new coach for long term
Solution: Get rid of Garth Snow

August 4, 2008  07:05 PM ET

Yea, and their going to give him a huge contract like Depietro 20 yrs or something along those lines.

August 4, 2008  09:33 PM ET

They have NO idea what they are doing. If Guerin, Comrie, Weight & Sillinger are your top paid forwards what are you going to get for production? They are all unrestricted next year too. Streit would have been a good signing for a team like Red Wings who utilize the type of D that they like. No question about it, DiPietro is very good. But overall the Islanders aren't in a position to win with their roster. So when the next coach gets hired, they will be blamed for the terrible team. NO free agent worth anything wants to play for the Islanders.

August 4, 2008  10:27 PM ET

This 'hiring; procedure is ludicrous. Wno makes 'long standing' and 'agreeing with whatever the general manager degrees' a prime qualification for a coach. What about the talents, knowledge, ability to put the right players in at the right time and on and on that ordinarily make a coach good or bad.
Worse, if Crawford and Gallant are the top prospects for coach after a so called thorough series of interviews and prospects that included Queeneville and others.it only showx how incredibly stupid it was to have fired Nolan and how desperate Snow must be now to find someone... anyone to hire. Then, to include a candidate known for not working with young players and at the same time to stress how important that is ...all completely ludicrous. Wang Chung better get on the ball and fire Snow quickly. Snow had the best possible coach the Islanders could have had fired, and now what ...SLUSH for coach possibilities...
