As the Rockies continue internally discussing the pursuit of Twins starter Livan Hernandez, they are bracing for an extended absence for his all-time nemesis, first baseman Todd Helton. Several Rockies players are pulling for the team to sign Hernandez (10-8, 5.48) as a fifth starter.

Hey, if he plays in Colorado, maybe he can get a 6+ ERA?

August 4, 2008  06:17 AM ET

To little to late. Location, timing, and money.

August 4, 2008  06:17 AM ET

Oh yes, sign him.........maybe the Twinks can get something for him after all.

August 4, 2008  06:17 AM ET

Do it, he can help

August 4, 2008  06:41 AM ET

SOLD!!!!!!

August 4, 2008  08:38 AM ET

Rockies are playing for next year... no miracle finish this year.

August 4, 2008  08:40 AM ET

Surely they have young pitchers that could use the experience rather than this guy.

August 4, 2008  09:22 AM ET

the Rockies are finally starting to win some games, they dont need this guy coming in and NOT helping them, they are a relatively young team, Hernadez is on the down ward slide, it wouldn't be a good fit.

August 4, 2008  09:41 AM ET

Yeah, I don't see him as a fit in Colorado at all

Something tells me the Twins will gladly unload this walking Big Mac for some used snow tires...

One of the great lines from MAJOR LEAGUE....

"Hold on, I gotta guy on the other line that wants to talk about some white walls, talk to ya later!"

I wonder if the Rockies would consider trading Chris Iannetta to the Red Sox after the season for Clay Bucholtz and another prospect ?

August 4, 2008  12:58 PM ET

Looks Like Livan's been hitting the Adam Eaton diet! Go El Gordo!!!!

August 4, 2008  12:59 PM ET

What's your problem chasin utleys? You don't wanna give a brotha a chance do ya?

August 4, 2008  01:18 PM ET

No way. Iannetta is only the 4th Rockies draft pick as far as catchers go to play in the majors. He won't be going anywhere. Anyway, I have a hunch that with Manny out of the picture, the Sox will make a huge offer for Matt Holliday, and Buchholz would be part of that offer.

As far as Hernandez goes, why not try it? It would definitely be better than running out Valerio de los Santos every 5th day. In fact, anything would be better than that. There are a couple of guys in the minors that could come up though: Franklin Morales, Jason Hirsh, and Greg Reynolds. Hirsh was the main part of the deal that also brought back Taylor Buchholz and Willy Taveras, but I don't think that the Rockies believe that he's ready yet. Reynolds is on the DL with a bad wing. Morales has struggled with his command, but all reports say that he is looking great down in Colorado Springs. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Hernandez wearing the purple pinstripes sometime soon. It would be better than bringing back Josh Fogg, that's for sure.

I think Livan could be a great addition to this team. He may not be as good now as he once was, but he can take the ball every 5th day and he knows how to win. Right now, the Rockies are "thriving" on Cook and Jimenez. With Francis coming back, they have a pretty solid top 3. The 4th spot will remain with Glendon Rusch, another guy who just knows how to compete. The 5th spot has been De La Rosa or De Los Santos and neither can be counted on to provide a big game win IF NEEDED coming down the stretch.

Ifin this guy is picked up, the team that makes that mistake better hope that they can score more runs than he gives up, cuz he will give up plenty.

Why? Are the Rockies contending again this year?
