Ravens unsure of Suggs return

The Ravens remain in constant contact with Terrell Suggs but are not certain when the team's franchise player will report. Suggs has missed training camp to protest the franchise tag, which kept him from being a free agent this offseason. "We do have an idea of what he's thinking, but it's just an idea right now," John Harbaugh said of Suggs' projected return. "There's no certainty." According to Harbaugh, the defensive coaches are in "constant communication" with Suggs about practices and schemes. Harbaugh said Suggs' absence doesn't bother him.

never understood players that hold out after getting tagged. you could be paid like the top 5% of your employment field yet choose to be unemployed, that is the message? i mean name the last tagged player who got more than he was going to get before the holdout...

August 4, 2008  07:51 AM ET

On the other hand, charm city, he is very, very good. This is the Ravens D, for cryin out loud. Give him more money. Give him the inner harbor if he wants it. There is a clock running in Baltimore and they nearly beat the Pats last year.

August 4, 2008  08:26 AM ET

he doesn't want to go through training camp. he'll get some fines then show up and play. not like he is going to sit out the season. he is just enjoying the excuse to have a prolonged vacation.

August 4, 2008  09:39 AM ET

Vaughn9 & PW,

He can hold out becuase at the moment he is not a contracted player. A lot of franchise players do this. They get to skip training camp, then sign the contract and play the season. He will not be fined for missing because technically until he signs the franchise tag, he is not under contract.

as a Ravens fan (obviously) I think he's overrated and over-priced. I really think they should use him as trade bait to get a good receiver here, finally. the ravens have plenty of young, rush end/LB's types already who are even younger than Suggs is.

i.e. they should trade him back to his home state of Arizona for one Anquan Boldin, who wants outta the Cards organization...

just my take...

HA!

im not sure why everyone thinks anaquan is a number one...hes a quicker higher jumping hines ward..a slot reciever..he may have started otherwise but thats what hes grown into..and a slot receiver is not gonna lead a team...hines ward for example..or wes welker...anaquans the top slot guy in the game...but hes not a downfeild threat

August 4, 2008  10:38 AM ET

hey hitman, if he pisses off the coaches he'll pay. the public might not know about it but, they have ways to get their point across. like i said he is enjoying his prolonged vacation.

Good question...we haven't had a decent QB since the team arrived in 96. Flacco could be the guy, but my money is on Troy Smith. He has the leadership qualities you need for a QB, and his arm is pretty strong. He could end up being this year's Derek Anderson (which is a guy we should have never given up on).

I believe that you guys won a superbowl with a decent Quarterback, but you didn't want to pay him at all so he left via Free Agency. Dose the Name Trent Dilfer ring a Bell?

The combination of Vinny Testaverde, Michael Jackson, and Derrick Alexander were, in 96-97, the # 1 passing offense in the entire league.

August 4, 2008  01:25 PM ET

Don't worry CV, Derrick "Flash-in-the-pAnderson" getting away from us is not a big deal. Hindsight is 20/20 man.

when we put him on the practice squad to add another CB due to injuries i didn't see anyone panicking.

the bottom line is this: many cleveland fans want brady quinn and don't have a good feeling about D.A. His #'s fell off so badly from mid-season last year which helped cost the Browns a playoff spot.

Phil Savage has been picking up Ravens practice squad QB's for years now and now that he MIGHT have found a diamond in the rough that's all we gotta hear about. Ridiculous...

Even if he stayed here who says our line and WR's, etc. are as good as his supporting cast in Cleveland ? Because regrettably they're not..

Hey Ed,

In one sentence you claim that Suggs is overrated and overpriced....and in another suggest a trade that would bring one of top WRs in all the NFL in return. Which is it...is he worth it for Arizona to trade Boldin for....if so...then he is not overrated.

August 4, 2008  07:28 PM ET

why do teams play with players like this?this creates problems with the whole team, and sends messages to young players that they can do this also.get rid of these players.trade them get the best offer you can.

August 5, 2008  11:14 AM ET

good call Last Call. I see your point.

maybe i jumped the gun on the "overrated" part but i just don't think he's worth the $ he wants because he's a very streak-prone player and we have alot of young talent in our LB core that can rush the passer now.

yes, he's still young but i just don't know if he's worth all that cap space he's going to be taking up when obviously the Ravens need help in other key areas. they can trade him and get some picks and value or like i said maybe package him for Boldin ?

Dilfer had very little to do w/the Ravens Super Bowl victory. That season the Ravens had Jamal Lewis and Priest Holmes at RB, a huge O line that was excellent at run blocking and the one of the best defenses ever. Dilfer was good - but certainly not worth building a team around.

Vinny Testaverde was horrible. He may have teamed up w/Jackson and Alexander to form the #1 passing offense in the league - but that was only after he threw a couple of interceptions, tripped over his own feet and fumbled on a key drive to lose the game for us. Trust me, I've been a season ticket holder since 96 and we have NEVER had a QB who we could trust to win the game for us.
