Slumping Giambi shaves mustache

The 'stache is gone. Jason Giambi inspired the Yankees faithful with his retro mustache, which he grew in early May to try to snap himself out of a horrific slump. It worked, but only for a time. Giambi, 12-for-66 (.182) since July 3 after going 0-for-3 yesterday, shaved off the mustache after the Yankees' 14-9 win over the Angels. "There's no more hits in it," Giambi said as he boarded the team bus for the team's flight to Dallas. "No more hits."

Girardi was an idiot not to bring in Marte against Tex yesterday; however, he did pinch-hit Gambino for Cano to help pile on (at least).

And no, I won't say it.

When you start needing a gimmick to change your approach, it's time to hang it up. Try slapping your bat with some KFC. At least you won't go hungry if it fails.

Do you think the lack of PED's might have something to do with it?

August 4, 2008  07:07 AM ET

Where's my Manny story?!?!? I demand one to three Manny stories!!!

August 4, 2008  07:42 AM ET

stache or not no new contract. like him but its time to go.

August 4, 2008  08:42 AM ET

What a waste of story.. it looked pasted on anyway...

August 4, 2008  09:25 AM ET

glad that the Stache is gone, hopefully now he can get back to getting some hits and helping the Yankee's get to the playoffs.

August 4, 2008  09:42 AM ET

Maybe he should try wearing a merkin on his face.

August 4, 2008  09:47 AM ET

So back to the golden thong then?

PED's won't make you actually hit the ball...yes, they will make you hit the ball FARTHER, but they will not make you actuall hit the ball...you do have to have some talkent to make it to the Majors!

August 4, 2008  09:59 AM ET

I suggest Giambi go on another "Diet"

hasn't done any PED since 2000 besides don't you think that someone who has admitted to it, would have manitory tests done like once or twice a week. even if someone has taken PED's it doesn't make them hit the ball, its can make them it it FARTHER but they still have to be able to hit the ball, to make it into the majors.

August 4, 2008  10:37 AM ET

Now can Girardi Please stop batting Giambi 5th behind A-Rod? thats not enough protection for A-rod right now. Bat the X-man 5th!

I don't care ifin he did it in 2000 or even ifin he did it yesterday......I don't care ifin he apologized......the guy cheated and he and all the rest of the cheaters should be banned from baseball.

that the Yankees have Giambi and Sexson when they could have gotten Teixiera is a crying shame and could very well be one of the reasons they don't make post-season play ... of course Girardi's bungling of many games during the 'first half when it doesn't matter' will prove to be the key if in fact the Yankees don't recover the 7 games they need to overtake Rays in the loss column

August 4, 2008  11:55 AM ET

yankeeguy28 -- the Yankees have no reliable threatening power guy to bat behind ARod ... heck, even ARod is not a reliable threatening power guy ... the only consistent bat right now is Abreu's .... but I agree that Girardi should move Nady to the 5 spot ... but then, when did Girardi ever make a good choice?

August 4, 2008  11:57 AM ET

The big question now is what will the Yankees do with the thousands of fake Giambi moustaches they were going to sell as souvenirs !!!

What were the Yankees offering for Teixiera that was better than Kotchman..... better yet, who did they have to offer that was better??? Braves want a young player who they could start immediately..... I doubt anyone on the Yankees, that they'be willing to trade fit that bill....
