Wood closer to Cubs return

Kerry Wood could be back for the weekend series against the St. Louis Cardinals. A key will be how Wood feels today after throwing a simulated game Sunday, his second over the last four days. Wood threw 30 pitches as bullpen catchers Corey Miller and Edgar Tovar batted. Miller nearly hit one of the first pitches into the seats. But Wood improved as he threw, while an audience, including manager Lou Piniella, pitching coach Larry Rothschild, trainer Mark O'Neal, bench coach Alan Trammell and assistant general manager Randy Bush, watched. ''He felt OK,'' Piniella said. ''He looked a little rusty, but that's to be expected.''

No rush. Marmol is fine. Let him rest now for a sept. tune up and then the playoffs.

One of these days he's going to pitch his arm clear out of it's socket and into the catchers glove. Can this guy ever stay healthy?

Injury waiting to happen. He is good for an inning only per game.

How long til Harden is on the DL? You know it's coming.

Tell It - I've got August 19th in the office pool

I will save T&R the time and resources and let you know what that next devastating injury for Woods will be:

He will go back to the DL due to a carbuncle on his arse, from sitting so much.

Gee, I stepped out for a bit and find myself very surprised there are no Cubs' fans taking the TRUTH to task for stating something extremely obvious.....

August 4, 2008  12:55 PM ET

Kerry Wood a legitimate closer? His long list of injuries make him as productive and reliable as Natalie Wood.

August 4, 2008  03:20 PM ET

Good news for the Cubs, the sooner Wood comes back, the sooner he can get hurt again. His name should be Kerry Glass.

August 4, 2008  04:46 PM ET

How long till Harden gets hurt?
Tell it like he wishes it was

Give it a rest. Only Cardinal pitchers get hurt these days.

August 4, 2008  06:19 PM ET

dustygrady, you sit there in your Cubs Tshirt and tighty whitey underwear knowing full well that the Cubs should have a bigger lead than they do over the Cardinals. St. Louis is hanging around. The Cubs may yet make it to the playoffs, but either in September or October, they'll choke - just like they always do.

The Cardinals are one of the four all-time best franchises in baseball, along with the Dodgers, Yankees and Red Sox. The Cubs... they are generally regarded as the LA Clippers of MLB.

August 4, 2008  06:22 PM ET

Seriously, get off his back. If you were him and you were over used by that **** head Baker you would be in the same position.

August 4, 2008  07:08 PM ET

Tell It...

No. The LA Clippers of baseball are are the White Sox. At least in Chicago they are. And get real. What is wrong with the lead they have now? Just how big is it supposed to be at this stage? Against the likes of the phoney Brewers and the pretender Cardinals it is more than comfortable enough.

Yes, I grant you the Cardinals have one of the stronger franchises in the National League. At least as far as playoff appearances are concerned. But hanging on to yesteryear will not prevent them from sitting on the sidelines for a second straight year. Nor will it prevent the Cubs from sliding right into the World Series in this very weak National League.

And yes, My underwear is still white, but it sure beats the brown and yellow stained underwear you've been wearing for the last month.

Hell, dude, I go commando. The Cubs are actually looking good this year. But I keep waiting for the bottom to fall out on them. I'm not a Cubs fan, but I am a baseball fan, and I cannot imagine how big the World Series would be if the Cubs made it there, especially this year. I am actually rooting for them, but with their history...

Grossedout, please get a clue. Your illiterate drivel reeks and offers no original insight or witticisms. However, I will no longer accentuate your banal commentary with scalding remarks, original monikers and irreverant vernacular because I feel it may hurt your feelings. Instead, I will do as everyone else, and simply ignore them, hoping that you don't go away mad, but rather, that you just go away...
