Rodgers not backing down

No matter that Brett Favre is the NFL's iron man and record holder, no matter that there are petitions and fan drives to bring him back and the airplane with the banner in tow circling Lambeau Field Sunday night that urged the Green Bay Packers to Bring Back Brett. No matter that it would be tough enough just to follow Favre, much less beat Favre. Aaron Rodgers will not back down. He will welcome him back, but he will not back down. After the Packers' Family Night scrimmage Sunday night, Rodgers expertly toed the line between welcoming Favre back as a teammate and not at all surrendering his status, which, at Favre's retirement announcement in early March, has been as the starting quarterback of the future. "Hopefully I'll be the guy this year," Rodgers said. "I don't know if I am going to get a chance to lead this football team (but) you're going to have to pry it out of my fingers this year."

Sounds like a Tom Petty lyric ".....I won't back down" To bad you may have to.

Brett Farve is old news and should just enjoy his retirement. The Packers had a lucky run last year, and I doubt with this distraction the team will be able to hold it together long enough to make the playoffs with this nonsense ruining their chemistry.

I'm gonig to laugh when he leaves the Packers after this mess, and says those boys are messed up there in Green Bay. While Favre is still deciding if he wants to play again after this season. another year of as the Favre turns.

three Brett Favre stories ... even though this one is titled with the other QB

August 4, 2008  08:51 AM ET

I think this will make Aaron work hard as hell. Though if he actually outperforms Favre in Training Camp, will Green Bay still give the job to Favre?

August 4, 2008  09:04 AM ET

I'm with you, D. SLIQ. At this point though, who knows.

August 4, 2008  09:10 AM ET

Rogers is screwed. Even if he wins, if they don't trade Farve, every sack or bad passed would be followed by calls for Farve from the fans.

Had Farve been a man and not fake-retired, the Pack could have figured out better what to do. Now they'll be ridiculed no matter what happens.

August 4, 2008  09:43 AM ET

I feel bad for Rodgers...... you're right PSU, he is in one of the biggest no-win situations I think I have ever seen in sports.

August 4, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Maybe the Packers will hear more boo's at their away games this year than the Patriots will at their's.

Only a christian would retire with honers and come back.

Lady's Coach Belicat | 08/04/08, 09:47 AM

I highly doubt that.

If some fans find the heart to boo a little girl from NE, I think they'll always boo the Pats as hard as they can.

The Pack will be irrelevant this year. Mark my words, NO SUPERBOWL no matter who they start!

August 4, 2008  10:17 AM ET

I'm riding with Rodgers on this one... I hope he comes out on top...

August 4, 2008  10:27 AM ET

I WILL NOT BACK DOWN, ,I WILL NOT BACK DOWN,I WILL NOT BACK DOWN, I WILL NOT BACK DOWN, I WILL NOT BACK DOWN, I WILL NOT BACK DOWN-aaron rogers in a fetal position

August 4, 2008  11:54 AM ET

So what else can he say? "uhhhh I'm new, easily confused and totally lacking in experience but on the bright side I'm not fat like the backup in Indy; you know the Lorenz guy who can't run...."

August 4, 2008  11:56 AM ET

You've got to hand it to Rodgers. All spring and summer until Favre raised his grizzled head, Rodgers was handed the ball and told the team was his to QB. Along comes Miss Thing, wanting his toys and adulation back, and he's looking up from under the team bus. This has not been the Packers' finest hour - and Favre has gone miles toward sullying his own reputation. Now, HE'D better play well. Nice guys finish last, Aaron - alas.

August 4, 2008  12:13 PM ET

Sounds and looks like a competitor to me! Don't give in Aaron and lets have Favre traded to the Vikings and prove that there was tampering going on.

August 4, 2008  12:39 PM ET

I am seriously not convinced Favre will beat this guy out. He looked great against Dallas last year, by all accounts has looked great in camp and Favre really seemed to be looking like an old man towards the end of last year.

August 4, 2008  12:41 PM ET

If the QB competition is a fair one, Rodger's only chance of beating out Favre is if Favre gets traded or injured.

Any way this turns out, it's not going to be a fun year for Aaron Rodgers or for the Packers this year! I hope all the Favre worshipers choke on him by mid season, if not sooner!
