FSU recruit awaits Miami offer

South Broward has not been the Mecca of Broward County football over the past few years, more so known as a girls' basketball power, but 2008 is a different year and this season the Bulldogs have as highly a touted prospect as they've had in years. Left tackle Steven Jacques is big and so strong that his weight-room numbers are borderline mind-boggling for a high school football player. The 6-5, 285-pound tackle has a bench max of 425 pounds and a squat max of 565 pounds. To put into perspective how impressive that is, look no further than Coral Gables. Jacques' bench max would be tied for first at the University of Miami right now and his squat max would be second on the team. But the Hurricanes have not pulled the trigger to offer Jacques yet even though he already has offers from a number of other schools including Florida State, South Florida, Auburn, South Carolina and West Virginia. Miami offensive coordinator Patrick Nix visited Jacques during the spring and requested film of the talented and strong offensive linemen, a position of need for the Hurricanes, but to date, no offer has come -- which has left Jacques surprised.

He may be big and strong now, but his future includes: Spine, neck, hip, knee, and ankle problems. Oh yeah, and disability checks.

After reading FN, i've decided that WVU offers a scholarship to EVERYONE.

"Finally a new picture of Randy!!!"
i was thinking the same thing

Randy looks great in this new picture compared to the last one where he looked suicidal. Go Canes!

Big deal, Oklahoma state recruit benched 545 and squatted over 900 atTX state powerliftng meet this year. Also his squat would place him about 4th on my sons high school team here in Texas(Crowley). The thing is lifting weights doesnt mean you can play this game.

thank god a new picture!..thats what a good recruiting class can do for your appearence..go canes

It's good to see Mr. Shannon smile, I was starting to worry about him.

August 5, 2008  12:08 PM ET

Smiling Randy Shannon. If this kid is good, then the Canes have to go after him.

August 5, 2008  12:12 PM ET

doesnt sound too good for FSU

August 5, 2008  01:38 PM ET

I'll make you a deal. You guys can have this kid if we can borrow about 15 guys from your team for our first 3 games. Deal? :-)

It seems as though there have been some sort of "academic irregularities" at Florida State, and some of our players have decided to, uh... take some time off at the beginning of the season to get back onto the Dean's List.

August 5, 2008  03:09 PM ET

I can't describe how dissapointed i am in them not including the randy shannon ice grill...

August 5, 2008  03:28 PM ET

seems like lately choosing between Miami and FSU is like choosing whether to join the bloods or cryps...

Nice they got a good picture of Shannon. And be skeptical of any lifts reported from coaches. I've been in several D1 weight rooms and seen the numbers posted on the wall and the numbers reported in media guides. Suprise...they don't match!

If you want to see great lifts, watch Olympic lifters. They don't wear bench shirts, squat suits, groove briefs etc. I've seen guys in bench shirts that couldn't PULL a bar down to their chest until it had 300+ pounds on it.

Also, heavy lifting does not guarantee disability later in life. I heard all that from older guys growing up. When they heard I power lifted, they were experts on how I would have arthritis, bad knees, bad back, bad shoulders. I'm 44 now and still lifting hard 3 or 4 times a week and feel fine.

We all know that Coach Randy Shannon and assistants have a great ability to recruit, but my main concern is that these talented players can get through the clearing house. Another concern is the need to recruit heavy on offensive linemen. We need to recruit more from the Mid-West where some of the best linemen have come from. I do see a major improvement of talent for the Canes but time will only tell and as cane fans we expect to win right away. This year we will compete seriously fro the ACC championship and hopefully the National Championship the following year. For those comments about recruits selecting FSU or Miami, I really don't know why they choose FSU like Antone Smith maybe they think that starting right away is their priority above all else.

USF better come in and scoop this guy up ASAP, while da 'Canes debate. This kid is already a top tier prospect in H.S. Not sure what the Canes are thinking, but the BULLS should be in his living room this week to close the deal...

Been a 'Canes fan from the late 80's early 90's.. really want to see the program get back to national title status.. Shannon needs all the talent he can acquire, not sure why their belaboring this signing. but my alma mater SoFla Bulls have been recruiting this guy to, so hopefully they can step in and sign this guy. He's gonna be a beast!! I see him starting his freshman year...
