Mets to make run at Garcia

Beset by pitching injuries, the Mets are expected to be in the running for veteran right-hander Freddy Garcia if the two-time All-Star holds up well this afternoon in an open workout in Miami. Several teams are scheduled to scout the workout at the University of Miami, including the Mets, as Garcia tries to work his way back to the majors after shoulder surgery. Garcia, who is 6-2 in nine postseason starts, made 11 regular-season starts with the Phillies last year before being shut down. "Freddy is doing great on his rehab," agent Ed Greenberg said yesterday.

At this point would be a low risk high reward option.

The Mets won't be the only bidder. Expect several other teams to jack up the price.

Good luck with that. A desperate team making a desperate move. The guy has nothing left, typical mets.............

I guess the choke is probably coming a little earlier than last year. Thank god Billy (blown save) Wagner is no longer with the Phils.

Even if he has nothing left, I agree with Phillydave......low risk for the potential reward if he is effective.

I guess it's low risk.... but what a stiff he was last year before he even got hurt.

I think it's a high risk they are still in a pennant race and the last time we see him pitch he might as well have put a tee out there he would've gotten more outs.

With that being said, this is the best news I have heard all day.

Old news.I won't be surprised when he ends up in NY.Given his spring training visit to St.Lucie there might be a deal already in place...

August 5, 2008  11:10 AM ET

yankees don't need him because the almight pavano is coming back soon...

I just hope he doesn't sprain his arse again and go on the DL for 3 years...

Very true. I'm suprised Philly isn't looking at him again just as security since they don't know for sure Myers will hold up. Can't hurt.

August 5, 2008  11:46 AM ET

The Phils are probably looking at him but not as agressively as the Mets right now with their current rotation injuries problem.

He should give the Phillies a discount for that 10 million they paid him for 1 measely win last year. And to top it off, Gavin Floyd looks like he has finally grown a set in Chicago. A lot of people kill Gillick for signing Adam Eaton, but that move is right up there. I guess the Phils thought a physical wasn't necessary for Garcia when they made that trade. Maybe Carrasco will be our Marty Bystrom in September if he has a decent month in AAA.

What up X? I couldn't agree with you more, let's package Eaton with him and jettison 600 lbs of futility. To my firends on the east coast wait til you get the storm we had in Chicago, 60,000 lightning strikes in 6 hrs, tornados, you name we had it.......enjoy, I mean take cover!

August 5, 2008  11:52 AM ET

I meant friends not fir-ends. This just in Manny shaved his ars!!!

August 5, 2008  12:01 PM ET

Sweet storms are great. I hope Eaton gets stuck in one and his pickup truck floats to Canada with him in it.

August 5, 2008  12:06 PM ET

Eaton?...............Garcia would be an upgrade!

August 5, 2008  12:07 PM ET

Whoa there X, the storm I mentioned didn't have the magnitude to jostle Eaton's lard-laden keister, hell Hurricane Katrina didn't have the magnitude.......maybe if we made him a "stopper" we could have inserted him into the levee lineup, plugged some gaps and saved the Crescent City.
