Wood lobbies for Cubs return

On Monday morning, Kerry Wood took to the radio airwaves to lobby for his return from blister issues in that night's series opener against Houston. On Monday afternoon, Wood took the case out of the court of public opinion and presented it to the one judge that ultimately matters: Lou Piniella. Verdict? Motion denied. "I tried," Wood said. "It didn't work too well." The Cubs closer, however, is expected to be paroled from the disabled list on Tuesday, certainly no later than Wednesday. Though when he does return, Wood will not do so as the closer, at least not immediately. Piniella said Wood will make at least one middle relief appearance -- a "tuneup," he said -- to make sure there are no complications from the blister. It's a caution the Cubs manager feels he can afford with Carlos Marmol, Bob Howry and Jeff Samardzija available to close.

I won't beat on the Cubs fans today about Wood, Harden, and a potential Cubs collapse. Good luck, Cubbies, in pushing for the NL title. As a baseball fan, I'm rooting for you.

Agreed, but I would love to see the Cubs make it to the NLCS and lose to the Phillies, living as I do in the Chicago 'burbs I get the business from every Tom, **** and Harry (Caray?).

If Kerry would stop rubbing himself, maybe the blister would heal, Perhaps he should take a tip from his former teammate, Moises Alou, and wash his hands with urine to toughen them up.

August 5, 2008  01:46 PM ET

You want Kerry to pee on Moises Alou? I'm down with that!

August 5, 2008  02:58 PM ET

I think the DL doesn't hold the same appeal for Kerry that it used to. I mean, he spent most of three years together with Prior on the DL.........probably not the same now that Mark is gone........

So Wood "pleading" must sound like this...

"I'm not a fragile creampuff anymore, I got myself straightened out. I have changed my ways. I have been working out with Matt Clement and Carl Pavano".

If the man says he's ready, let him play! He's much better than a few of the closers Lou keeps throwing out there hoping they somehow manage to save the game!

Howry! Are you frickin nuts. Howry couldn't close an umbrella. The Cubs need to tell him to hit the road.

Yeah, Howry sucks pretty fierce this year. I think he'll be DFA'd pretty soon. We should have kept Eyre, and got rid of Howry. At least Eyre was of SOME use to us.

August 5, 2008  05:59 PM ET

What happened to Howry? Hasn't he been rock solid the last couple of years as a setup guy for the Cubs?

Naw, it's me. I just hate picking on the Cubbies all the time. Yankees suck. Is that better?

Where is Howry? Good question. Course, Marmol is there, and Samardjia. Wood should be back soon.

To all my fans - "KNOCK ON WOOD, KNOCK ON WOOD " !!!

August 5, 2008  06:37 PM ET

Hey, Woody's back. A scoreless inning. How about that. And yes, Howry sucks. But Lou keeps rushing him out there in tight ballgames and he keeps giving up leads. They should have designated him for assignment the same way they did Scott Eyre.

I agree,. Not sure if Lou thinks Howry will regain his stuff or what. I can tell you he is toast for the year and theres absolutely no reason to have him on the team

Howry was great last year. But he seems to have lost it this year. He has been giving up long balls left and right. Now it seems as if he's guaranteed to let our starters down.

"Kerry Wood is back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

And now he has 'Back Issues'
