MLB may punish Ozzie for threat

Manager Ozzie Guillen received an apology from umpire crew chief Gary Cederstrom after Sunday's tension-filled 14-3 loss at Kansas City. Whether that apology supersedes strong comments made by Guillen will be determined by Major League Baseball, which is exploring whether the White Sox manager faces any discipline. An MLB official confirmed the investigation, while another official believed that the apology could clear Guillen of any further penalties. Guillen was ejected Sunday after umpire Tim Timmons ruled that reliever D.J. Carrasco intentionally hit Miguel Olivo with the bases loaded and the Sox trailing 6-0 in the fifth inning. Baseball, however, is aware of Guillen's comments, including an apparent threat when he said, "Be ready for the warning because I signed a five-year deal with this club, and we're going to play Kansas City a lot. "I don't say be careful. [The Royals] played with fire, and I respect everyone on the pro level. But enough is enough." A decision could come soon, because several members of MLB's office involved in on-field matters are leaving for the Beijing Olympic Games.

Good maybe they should kick him out of baseball for a while.. when isn't he threatening people or his own team mates..

August 5, 2008  09:48 AM ET

This is just Ozzie being Ozzie.

August 5, 2008  09:57 AM ET

NYY25to13...I'm guessing you follow Ozzie on a regular basis?

August 5, 2008  10:09 AM ET

I wish they would permanently remove him from baseball. Maybe place him in a Junior College English class so he can speak better. The guy is a tool and bad for baseball.

August 5, 2008  10:12 AM ET

oh gimme a break..its baseball people...

now its all politics....why cant we just play the **** sport without congress getting into this crap...come ON PEOPLE....

the corporate heads that are running our sports are ruining it for the rest of us...what is there to watch anymore???

August 5, 2008  10:18 AM ET

jayhawk...why the hell do you care if he speaks English up to your standards?

August 5, 2008  10:28 AM ET

ozzie - your team just got your *** kicked and knocked out of first place. Maybe some attention should be focused somewhere other than a p***ing contest with the cellar-dwellers.

August 5, 2008  10:48 AM ET

Duany Duany - what else is he supposed to do? His pitching has fallen off the earth & the Sox don't have any other options. Nearly all of them are veterans, and at this point in the season it's sink or swim; they either get back to the unbelievable first half form OR they stay here on earth and continue failing.

I wouldn't expect anything other than a racist comment from a Jayhawks fan. Just so you know, a lot of people in civilized America aren't that fond of Kansas... in fact, when I take over America I am trading the entire state of Kansas to Mexico for the Mayan ruins.

August 5, 2008  10:57 AM ET

Ozzie meltdown=China Syndrome.

August 5, 2008  11:19 AM ET

im not sure people from kansas speak english up to my standard so we'll call it even

August 5, 2008  11:35 AM ET

His comments didn't seem all the threatening to me. That umpiring crew was terrible for that entire series. Completely blew a DP call at second base.

August 5, 2008  11:40 AM ET

What's wrong with Kansas? They were a great progressive rock band in the 70's. I have no problem with anyone's ethnicity, but I do take umbrage to people who have been in the states quite a while and refuse to acclimate themselves. I'm sure there'll be a thread on this as the season progresses, so enough on that. Ozzie's enthusiasm/insanity is certainly a double-edged sword, when they're motivated and winning it's tolerable, but when they're losing he's a horses ars. Chicago Al makes a valid point about an aged, veteran Sox team: my question is why do veterans need such tirades? that being said "GO WHITE SOX"!!!

August 5, 2008  11:41 AM ET

This is just Ozzie being Ozzie.

Ozzie being Ozzie, Manny being Manny....................maybe they got a bad batch of elotes. Your thoughts Chicago Al?

Utleys, the man speaks English. He understands it, he speaks it. Maybe not poetically, but at least he's got it down. Yeah he has that accent that makes him hard to understand sometimes, but it's not like he hasn't acclimated to the U.S.

Go check out some Emmitt Smith quotes from ESPN and tell me how much different his grammar skills are than Ozzie's.

August 5, 2008  12:15 PM ET

anyone who follows baseball should realize that ozzie makes threats all of the time. as white sox fans we have gotten used to it. alot of it is just blowing off steam and most of the time nothing comes of them. it's no big deal. now, when it comes to those of you slamming him because of his english, how many players/managers/coaches on your favorite teams speak hispanic or have a thick accent, or even need to speak thru an interpretor (spelling)? just stay in new york, kansas or whatever area you are from, and comment on the stuff that you know about, like giambi's moustache or the wizard of oz!

Point taken, but I never said there weren't other culprits of maiming the King's English, and the fact that Emmitt was born here makes it more of an atrocity. (HE did read those cue cards failry well though for that beard dye he's pushing)

What can I say, "baseball has been beddy beddy good to me!" Garrett Morris circa 75'

If Ozzie would just stick to Spanish the vast majority of Umpires wouldn't have any idea (Or less of an idea) what he was saying and he'd be all right.
The man won a ring as a manager and he speaks English a lot better then I speak Spanish.

Chasin' Utleys | 08/05/08, 11:40 AM

I don't think the tirades effect the team much. They DO, however, keep the media from asking Paul Konerko why he decided he shouldn't hit anymore, or asking Jose Contreras whether he has considered throwing strikes somewhere OTHER than right down the middle of the plate, or asking Joe Crede whether he's considered heading to the lab in Northern Alberta where Wolverine got his skeleton metalized. Furthermore, they are playing like crap and I bet ANY manager would be pissed if a) DJ Carrasco was on his team, b) he had to put Carrasco in a blowout against the Royals, and c) Miguel Olivo charges the mound like he's any good. If I'm a manager I throw at Olivo every time; his antics will likely lead to GOOD players on the opposing team getting thrown out too.

maybe they got a bad batch of elotes. Your thoughts Chicago Al?

Chasin' Utleys | 08/05/08, 11:41 AM

Yeah... probably got them from Kansas... they do grow corn in Kansas, don't they? Not sure what else the state'd be good for...

Looks like no play for Mr. Grey. But seriously, check out this site, http://www.walterfootball.com/emmitt.php It's lengthy, but it's the most detailed look at the outstanding broadcasting career of one Emmitt Smith.
