Is Hawks' Khabibulin expendable?

If Cristobal Huet is as adept at stopping pucks as he is downplaying a goaltending controversy, the Blackhawks will be in good shape for the upcoming season. The Hawks introduced Huet, who signed a four-year, $22.5 million free-agent contract July 1, at a news conference at the United Center on Monday. Huet joins Nikolai Khabibulin in a goaltending tandem that will earn more than $12 million combined next season and said he is looking forward to battling for ice time during the 2008-09 campaign before taking over the No. 1 job the following season when Khabibulin's contract expires. General manager Dale Tallon says having two top goalies is necessary to be a top team and that with Huet and Khabibulin the Hawks are solid in goal. He said he doesn't anticipate any problems keeping both goaltenders but won't hesitate to make a move if the situation doesn't work out. A proven veteran like Khabibulin, 35, could be attractive on the trade market.

Tallon can say what he wants, but in the Salary cap era, no team can afford to spend 12 million on their goalies. The best goalies in the world have to have a team in fromt of them that can score and play D. Say what he wants, Khabibulin is trade bait and nothing more.

Khabibulin is a veteran. Proven, only with his time at Tampa Bay. It took him three years in Chicago to get ONE shutout. The Blackhawks need to trade him because he has been injury prone the last two years and he has not been dependable. Huet keeps teams in games and does what goalie needs to do, give his team a chance to win. A goalie is like a pitcher. The hawks need to get rid of Khabi and give Corey Crawford of the new Finnish goalie a chance to be the backup and learn from Huet. And Khabi is 35, 35!!

August 5, 2008  09:33 AM ET

Khabibulin is expendable because he is very expensive and not very good. There in lies the rub! He hasn't been very good in Chicago because he's been hurt most of the time and, they can't really trade him for anything of value because he is so expensive. At $6.5 mil per year, not many teams are willing to take the gamble on Mr. Brittle!

I think Khabi should go to another team, but He is still a good goalie

And no doubt there will be a team who will take a chance on him, particularly if they have an injured goalie.

I would take Khabibulin in Deadmonton. Goalies play a long time.

im sure khabi is gone because he didnt do anything for us too much last season...yeah we made vast improvements but..he does not look like the goalie that helped the lightning win the cup back in 05....he's been very disappointing...

corey crawford is ur goalie of the future and and you even got Niemi on the back burner down in rockford...so why even debate this? get rid of khabi...get some more cash on hand...and lets see if we cant re sign another player or two on our team for extensions...we need to keep this team for years to come..

Khabi is going to help some team immeasurably this season, but I think The Hawks willbe just fine

Short answer, yes. I mean, come on!, they brought in Huet (for a pretty big salary), which infers they were trying to upgrade.

I hope he wasn't thinking of Detroit as an example when he said two top goalies is a must in this league. I mean Osgood made like 650K last year. And he was the All-Star starter! Osgood was left for dead by everybody else and the Wings got more than great value for him this past season. It was a resurrection year, as Osgood, McCarty and Drake got some life pumped back into them.

Secret admission for the day: I totally forgot that Khabi backstopped for TB on way to the Cup. I've forgotten more hockey than Scotty Bowman knows. Wait...that's not right is it? Scotty has forgotten more than I know. At any rate, I've forgotten a lot of hockey.

Don't need him! The Oil already have an experienced goalie in Roloson. And, Roli the goalie has been much better playing for Edmonton than St. Nick was playing for Chicago.

I think, the Oilers are set in net with Garon, Roli and Druin-Deslaurier.

August 5, 2008  12:51 PM ET

I don't beleive what Tallon says either. You can't spend 12 mil on goalies when one of them is not performing to standards. He's trying to sell his mistake 3-yr ago to the owners. Expect Khabi to be traded before December. I hope for him he will rebond; he's done soem really good stuff in Phoenix and of course Tampa (got a little greedy at the end..).

Spiny? Changed your avatar? But still the same message, right?

I think we do need him. Garon is not good enough and Rolosson has not been the same since Marc Andre Bergeron crashed that Hurricane into him in the final that year.

I'd dump Rolosson and his bad teeth and pick up Bulin.

The Broken Wall is over-rated. They say they may trade him,eh? How about they cant find a trading partner. Thats more like it. He's been a total bust over there. No wonder nobody wants him.

Huet is way better than him.

When I heard the Hawks signed Huet I kinda thought that was a slap in the face to Crawford.Huet is 31 so he's in his prime and now Tallon needs to trade Khabi and reload on draft picks.I still think Crawford should get a long look soon.
