Coach K reducing Kidd's role?

If you're sleep-deprived and happen to be awake at 6 this morning, or perhaps catch a replay, it might be worth noting the starting lineup for Team USA in its men's exhibition basketball game against Australia. At halftime of the Americans' 89-68 victory over Russia on Sunday, coach Mike Krzyzewski made a switch, going with point guard Chris Paul over Olympic veteran Jason Kidd. While Krzyzew- ski said it was done only to get Paul more playing time that day, in some ways the move seems inevitable. Even while praising Kidd's leadership skills and importance to Team USA throughout the pre-Olympic tuneup, Krzyzewski points out how spectacularly Paul and Deron Williams have played and how the duo "needs to be on the court." What happens next may end up being Coach K's and Team USA's biggest test as they enter the Beijing Games.

With all due respect to what Kidd has acheived during his career, Paul is a better guard. Compare what each did in the playoffs, and I'm not talking just stats. The way each lead his team and made those around him better. Maybe with a training camp under his belt Kidd could have more success next year, but I have to go with CP3.

Coach K was simply giving one of his older veterans a rest in a game that had the Americans in control. I'm sure if the lead got down to 3 or 4 points, Kidd would have been checking back in.

This begs the question: Why did the USA keep three point guards on its roster? I respect Coach K, and think he's the best basketball coach at any level in the country, but shouldn't Kidd's spot have gone to a big guy such as Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, or the likes?

August 5, 2008  08:45 AM ET

Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett were asked to join the team a couple of years ago and turned the opportunity down. I think they were probably still smarting from the losses in Athens, or some other reason I don't know. It'd be great to have another center on the team, but it just wasn't an option, apparently.

hmmmmm.....play an aging veteran-
or play possibly the 5th or 6th best player in the league
tough call

JASON KIDD!!!

August 5, 2008  09:01 AM ET

Kidd would be great at managing the game and doesn't need heavy minutes to be effective. U.S. team should be ok with any of the point guards that they have.

August 5, 2008  09:16 AM ET

Kid is the oldest player on the team. He can bring some stability to the team if necessary, but he can't penetrate into the lane against zone defenses like Williams and Paul can. Jason is still good, but those two are on the verge of being great,

August 5, 2008  09:24 AM ET

With Kobe and LeBronZE on the team it's amazing anyone else can even touch the ball

August 5, 2008  09:24 AM ET

Kidd is slow period!!! If you sa the gameagainst Russia that PG was running JKidd right off the court!! CP# is the best PG on the team and gives us the best chance to win!

August 5, 2008  09:45 AM ET

Deron is the best PG on the roster and should be getting the most minutes

August 5, 2008  09:48 AM ET

Jason Kidd is still a great player, he's just aged. When he was Chris' and Derons' age, we was better than both of them. Nobody had seen a point guard like Jason, with his exceptional ball handling skills and passing skills since Magic Johnson. However, Kidd ALREADY HAS HIS GOLD MEDAL. His purpose on this team wasn't to be the starting PG. It is to help guide Chris and Deron, show them the ropes, fill them up with knowledge they need to have in order to be successful in International play. I'm sure Kidd is fine with his role. Old Man Longevity has caught up with him, that's all. I hope Chris and Deron are around long enough where he'll catch up with them too. That's the true sign of a great player, not when someone else can stop you, or throw you off your game, but when time run's its course and takes over. Nobody outlast time, and Jason's time in the NBA is winding up.

I really like the way D Will handles the team. I would like to see him start. He is very smooth and has a stellar J...I do however think Paul is a little better in the open court and that is definantly where the US stands out the most because of there elite Athleticism.

You mean Jason's time in the NBA is winding down!

if it's true, i think it's a great chance for kidd to help paul and williams with there games and give them a veteran advice at being a better point. Plus give the young guns a chance, it's there turn now.

"Jason Kidd is still a great player, he's just aged"

actually- he has aged and he's not 'great' anymore
- still a productive pint guard-
but you aren't going to win NBA championships with him
He has lost a step and was NEVER a good shooter.
for apoint guard that is NOT GOOD

Kidd is old. Even younger talented players don't come to the DT anymore, like KG... Surely Mr Triple Double can play but it's logic that people like Chris Paul, deserve more playing time.

August 5, 2008  10:39 AM ET

@jgb - I've never seen shooting as a necessity for point guards... I've always seen it as icing on the cake, and the best at that position being the ones that can't shoot... primary goal being calling the play and distributing the ball properly. He's still a Triple Double machine, even though he is someone you could flip a coin on whether he'll miss the layup he'll try on a break. And him losing a step, that's probably not a bad thing, Coach K always slows his teams down to establish position... fast breaks are rare, and there's definitely not gonna be any Showtime happening...
