Lucas forgives Smith after attack

06:45 AM ET 08.05 | There is no welcome mat when you come back to your football team a few days after sucker-punching a fellow player on the sidelines at practice. But at least it's bearable when the fellow you punched opens the door and lets you in. That's what Ken Lucas did for Steve Smith Monday at Wofford College. The morning after Smith faced his teammates in a private meeting room that included more than a few Carolina Panthers angry at him, Lucas told the whole world through the assembled media: "I have forgiven him." Lucas, with a broken nose and a purple bruise under his left eye, said he held no grudges and that he, Smith and the Panthers would move forward. "I go to Bible study, just like he does, every week," said Lucas. "For me not to be able to forgive him, then I'd just be wasting my time going to Bible study." Lucas said he knew it could tear up the team if he took any other approach. "We could pretty much throw the season away," he said. So he chose unity rather than disharmony.

This is just something to wrap your heads around. I could see this slightly happening. There are rumblings out of Carolina saying that Management as well as HC John Fox are fed up with WR Steve Smith???s actions. This isn???t the first incident that has happened and many other issues for Mini-me. The Cowboys have actually already had in house talks about acquiring Steve Smith as the No. 2 WR and eventual No. 1 when T.O. retires.

For a couple of Seconds, I was like ???This couldn???t happen???. But think about it. They brought back Moose as the No. 2, they brought in WR DJ Hackett who is one of the better WR???s no one really pays attention too, and they are looking at Dwayne Jarrett to do something. Their TE Jeff King is coming off of a big season and could do well again this season. Also another key contributor in the Passing game will be RB Jonathan Stewart. This guy can flat out catch the Football. So it???s not so much of a Stretch as you may think. I wouldn???t mind seeing 89 in Dallas.

Steve Smith is just like TO. He is upset unless he is Winning. Winning Cures all. He already has money, he wants some rings. I wouldn???t mind shipping a 1st round pick to Carolina for a Game Breaker!

Sorry for the book....it just won't let me copy and paste on a Blog.

The story here should be what prompted the fight! What happened during the scrimmage/drill that PO'd Smith enough to punch out Lucas. Not that they go to BIBLE STUDY every week. Perhaps Lucas had made an aggressive, defensive move that could have resulted in a season ending injury to Smith and he didn't like it. Give us the "angle" to the story SI.

They were sitting on the Sidelines with there helmets off watching a special teams drill........

How many teammates has this guy punched over the years? Oh yeah... and he is the captain on this team! Nice example their captain Steve.

Lucas was on one knee. Dann you Steve - now suspended for the first two games including San Diego. This was looking like a 10-6 team, now it looks like stupid things like this will deflate them. Kudos to Ken for being the man on this one.

Hey if I was stuck in Bible study every week, I'd wanna punch somebody too.

August 5, 2008  07:49 AM ET

Lucas is a big man to forgive Smith... Smith is a loser for sucker punching someone in the face. I have no respect for him... If he was a man he would have squared up with the man and given him a fair one... Now Lucas is sitting there with a broken nose and a big bruse under his eye... You know he would love nothing more than to get his revenge on smith's midget butt, but he's chosing to take team over self and move on... Kudos to Lucas.

Bible study, 'to err is human, to forgive divine'. At least he practices what gets preached.

Saw the video on MikenMike, looked sincere from both sides. Still think Smith is a petulant child and has issues

Stevie Suckerpunch strikes again

August 5, 2008  08:05 AM ET

Last time he struck he was sued and had to pay. Ken needs surgery that could take him out for 3 weeks. Absolute BS.

August 5, 2008  08:13 AM ET

The only thing that Smith and TO have in common is an intense desire to win on Sunday. Smith isn't as flashy as TO.
Lucas is in Bible Study because he wants to be. Don't criticize the man for being there.
Is everyone that posted here going over to the MLB section and criticize Prince Fielder of the Brewers for attacking a teammate in the dugout during a game?
This is a closed issue as far as the Panthers are concerned. They're moving forward.

This should be on the next UFC Card

August 5, 2008  08:31 AM ET

is he gonna get af ine, suspension, anything?

August 5, 2008  08:35 AM ET

2 game suspension....thats all I saw. He should get sued.

August 5, 2008  08:36 AM ET

Steve Smith is thuggin aint he???? Lol

August 5, 2008  08:37 AM ET

i have said before...let's see Steve suckerpunch one of his fat 330 pound offensive linemen and see how tough he thinks he is. Would have loved to have seen him try it on former Vike Joey Browner or Steeler Greg Lloyd...both martial arts experts.
