Do-or-die season for Willingham?

Tyrone Willingham was nearing the end of media day, aka The Hope Fest, when he encountered a question most pertinent to his future. "Do you think this team will be in a bowl game this year?" Willingham responded unblinkingly. "Yes." With practice under way, we can now unveil the inescapable theme of the 2008 Huskies season: Do Or Ty Die. Grab your magnifying glasses. Scrutinize the coach more than ever, if that's possible. This is the year everything becomes clear. We'll be examining Willingham, but he's not the most important figure in this fight. Ultimately, the coach's fate lies with the snotty-nosed young talent on this roster. If we don't agree on whether Willingham has had enough time to build a winner, we can concur with this certainty: In a must-win year, the Huskies are a great mystery, a team entangled by ability and inexperience. And it will take an extraordinary effort to accelerate this team's growth. So before wondering whether the Huskies will make a bowl, you must first ask if enough of those highly regarded sophomores and freshmen will play beyond their maturity levels. "We have to play older," Willingham admitted Monday.

Ty is a great coach, I think we all know that the man has the ability to be one of the best coach's in college football. But, with the team that he has this year and the Pac-10 looking to be pretty strong this season, I think he may be done this year with the Huskies. Personally, I think he should still be the coach at Notre Dame because he was doing a great job there before Weis was introduced. Yes, Weis had a good first season but with ty's players. Weis may be on the hot seat in two years if he can't come through this season and next season.

"Ty is a great coach, I think we all know that the man has the ability to be one of the best coach's in college football"

and why is this ?

Washington has ALWAYS been a solid team & have always been able to at least COMPETE in the pac 10
- if they currently aren't - you need to look at the head caoch & recruiting

Is he pouting?

August 5, 2008  09:46 AM ET

jgb I think Ty is a great coach by his track record he has had in college. Now we can all debate what "great" means. But one thing for sure is he can coach.

That's exactly right. The last consistently good coach was Don James, under whom UDub was a powerhouse and perennial contender in the PAC 10. They sputterred in the later 90s and have really fallen on hard times since giving Newhassle the boot. (Newhassle didn't do that well either.) UDub's main problem, like all PAC 10 teams now, is consistently getting the best players especially from CA. Somehow, USC has squared off the elite players; the rest of the teams are left to fight over the remainder like dogs. James used to be an excellent recruiter, but times have changed and most coaches now have recruiting abilities.

I think Ty is doing the best he can and that Washington will have a better year this year than last. (Not a breakout year, mind you, but better.) Alas, if the Huskies don't do well this year, it's sayonara to Ty.

Sounds like they have their excuses planned and ready.

How dare they question a coach who is 22-38 over the past 5 seasons. 1 good year at ND and that was with Bob Davies' recruits.

Yeah, well, Charlie Weis' early successes were largely due to Willingham's recruits, so it all evens out.

August 5, 2008  10:25 AM ET

What? You can't fire a black head coach. That would be racist. They need to give him a lifetime contract to avoid being racist. If you fire a black head coach, you are racist.

Right, Notre Dame haters?

Ty sucks as a head coach. He's also only gotten 1 2009 recruit so far. 1. He doesn't recruit, and his system sucks balls. Plain and simple.

I'm so sick of you Irish fans struggling with this. The only person who brought this up was KRB about recruits and I answered him. There was nothing about ND firing Ty or anything of that. Willingham does NOT suck as a coaching.

You'd think that last year's debacle would have instilled oh, I don't know, a modicum of humility in you guys. Or can't you stand the fact that this thread is NOT about ND? Why don't you get the f- over yourselves? ND has a LOT to prove this year. Until then, why not stifle?

This is a story about Willingham and UW so let's keep it that way, eh? Jesus.

Yeah but Charlie killed Ty on a little thing called recruiting which is the future. Wake up whiners. Charlie also has hired 2 black coaches as main assistants....Ty at ND or UW has hired.....ZERO. But ND is racist? Ty can't coach and now his excuses are being laid out. It's the snot nosed kids fault? Isn't that the case with every coach? Since he decides which kids come there it's really back on him isn't it or did he inherit snot nosed kids? Always an excuse with Ty whether the boosters, snotty kids, dog ate my playbook, etc.

This is pretty funny, but also stupid. It was an Irish guy complaining about racism that sets you off - complaining about racism. What the hell? Nobody who is other than some g oddam ned stupid Irish fan who introduced racism and really until "KRB" there was nothing to do with ND. (yeah, the first guy dropped somethng, but little and it wasn't about racism.) What, do you guys think that the world revolves around you and your issues? This was/is about Willingham at Washington, coaching the Huskies. Get the f- over yourselves and go over to the Clausen thread! This is about Ty, the PAC 10 and NOW, not ancient history.

(And by the way, if you continue to feel guilty about the past, go see Fr. Hesburgh.)

Actually, if you look at the very first post in this thread you will see a comment that Charlie only won with Ty's players. I was being sarcastic because I'm sick of people defending a coach with a horrible record. Many sports writers have shown where the recruits at ND were not on the level of previous years. To say that Charlie only won with Ty's recruits and not hold Ty to the same standard is stupid. The record clearly shows that TY had 1 decent season at ND. His first with Bob Davies players.

If he is such a great coach, when is he going to start producing. His record surely doesn't support his abilities. Then again. Maybe it does.

August 5, 2008  11:31 AM ET

Chad O,

Who recruited Brady Quinn? Weiss? Who had the WORST COACHING RECORD IN ND HISTORY? Oh yeah...who was the first (and only) coach to be fired from ND without fulfilling his contract? (Ty). Take some time and look over Ty's entire body of work--he has won wherever he's gone prior to UW. What has Charlie done? Won some Super Bowls (with the help of videotape). You're telling me that Charlie is the answer? The question must be--who can't win a bowl game? Or, who gets his team blown out when in major bowl games?

August 5, 2008  11:32 AM ET

BTW, not an Irish fan, just an observer. Again the first mention of ND was not by me. I was just responding.

August 5, 2008  11:35 AM ET

IrishR#1,

I know of someone's brother who was recruited by Weiss--they said he was pompous; the kid signed with the Badgers. Why can't Charlie recruit defensive players? Might have helped with those 38-0 spankings...nice coaching job v Navy (Ty never lost to them). Normally other countries lose to Navy, not ND. That gold is pyrite on that Golden Dome...

August 5, 2008  11:37 AM ET

KRB,

Brady Quinn was recruited by Davie? Their star running back from GA was recruited by Davie?

August 5, 2008  11:38 AM ET

Washington had some lean years after Don James, especially when they went to those ugly purple helmets. Ty will get the job done this year despite the negative energy from the ND fans. Hopefully, one of the Huskies wins come at the expense of the Irish. Would'nt that be something?

August 5, 2008  11:43 AM ET

Wouldn't....excuse me.

August 5, 2008  11:43 AM ET

hahahaha...boy you ladies are really funny...the complete idiocy of your thinking is so transparent..its absolutely astonishes me that you cant see that...charlie weiss has been a complete failure...the only good season he's had was with ty's players...through what lense are you viewing these two guys...oh yeah...charlies Irish

August 5, 2008  11:47 AM ET

goerge
exactly what has charlie done??.....name me one accomplishment....and dont run your recruiting class bu--sh-t over this way cause that dont mean s--t until they are coached and and they perform..
