Big Ten bashing comes into vogue

Now that preseason practice has begun and the start of the non-conference season is less than a month away, Big Ten bashing is in full bloom. Ohio State's poor performance in the national championship game the past two years seems to have tainted the entire conference. It doesn't seem to matter that the Big Ten has five teams ranked in the USA Today Top 25 preseason coaches' poll, tying it for the lead with the SEC and the Big 12. Ohio State has cruised to a 23-1 regular-season record the past two years but finished with embarrassing losses to the SEC's Florida (41-14) and LSU (38-24) -- in the BCS national championship game. It doesn't help the Big Ten's image that the Buckeyes are 0-9 overall against the SEC in bowl games or that both Michigan and Illinois have been blown out by Pac-10 power Southern California in the past two Rose Bowls. The brunt of the criticism has been directed at Ohio State coach Jim Tressel, whose Buckeyes return 20 starters and once again are overwhelming favorites to win their fourth consecutive Big Ten title. If that happens, a third consecutive trip to the national championship game in Miami would be a distinct possibility. But the criticism still follows the Buckeyes.

But but but Tressel is a GOD (and a regular co-signer for cars for his players).

All kidding aside, Tressel has done a great job at OSU and will probably win the NC this year unless USC does to them what OJ did to Ron and Nicole.

OSU will lose a Big 10 game this year. They won't have Morelli @ PSU throwing them TD passes, Michigan State should be decent, and Michigan might have nothing to lose.

August 6, 2008  07:03 AM ET

Oh Whaa Whaa Whaa, we're getting bashed. While the Big 10 is a very good conference in college football, there are more teams that get a boost from being there than not. In other words, teams aren't always that good but still get consideration for the rankings b/c their in the Big 10.

August 6, 2008  07:06 AM ET

This is the deepest OSU football team in modern history. It is also a veteran team with a veteran QB that has started in an NC game.

That spells bad news for opposing teams. No "Simpson look-a-likes" on this USC team.

August 6, 2008  08:02 AM ET

LOL....every August I hear the same thing about Ohio State: "This could be the most well-balanced squad Tressel has had in years....teams need to look out." Then, as always, they fail to live up to expectations. Here's a toast to enjoying another Buckeye disappointment this year!!!

August 6, 2008  08:04 AM ET

LetsGoPens - if you look at the average end of year rankings, the Big 10 is usually well represented so that blows a hole in your comment.

You should worry more about the performance of the Pitt football program because they are somethin' awful.

For my 55 years the "Big Ten" has actually been known as the "Big Two/Little Eight" and has never qualified to receive the pre-season respect afforded it by the sports media. While they have pillow fights among themselves other conferences play intra-conference foes on a regular basis. If OS were to schedule a bottom rung SEC team they might break even in a 10 game schedule - but I doubt it. Respect is EARNED - not PRINTED.

August 6, 2008  08:11 AM ET

I'm fine getting bashed. Conferences that think they are the best are eventually in for a surprise. See Big Ten few years back... It's all part of the ebb and flow. I think many big ten teams are on the upswing, even if some of them have bottomed out to do it.

August 6, 2008  08:16 AM ET

Big 10 teams consisently play in the top tier bowl games every year and most of them have winning bowl records.

You all are like auctioneers selling garbage.

August 6, 2008  08:21 AM ET

Michigan beating heisman trophy winning Tim Teebow and Florida doesn't get mention, AGAIN. And i find it interesting that the PITTSBURGH GAZETTE didn't even mention Penn state.

August 6, 2008  08:21 AM ET

Nice research Reebok. OSU has scheduled Texas a few years back, then USC the next 2 years, Miami of Florida (schedule right after the NC game in 2002) and Cal, Va Tech, Oklahoma in the coming years. Genius.

August 6, 2008  08:29 AM ET

They are certainly not getting bashed by the Ohio State Sports Netwrok AKA ESPN. How many OSU grads can they hire? My fave was when they asked sideline reporter Robert Smith if the Buckeye got in the endzone "It looked like he was in down before he crossed the goaline to me." Oh thanks, now let's hear from Kirk about how Michigan should try to beat OSU again because Florida isn't in the same league.

The big ten is the only conferefnce where you can lose to Ap State and get ranked a few weeks later above teams who lost to good teams. Gee why are you afraid of a playoff? it will ruin the tradition of our lil miss USA contest.

August 6, 2008  08:33 AM ET

OSU is a powerhouse of a team with a great coach and great players. They peaked a year early (see last year). This year they will be even better and after they beat USC who is down a little from previous years they will be back in the championship game.

August 6, 2008  08:33 AM ET

3 National Championship games in 5 years .. yep - we're 1-2 in those games AND we weren't even supposed to be anything other than a rebuilding team last year! We'll take it .. now sit back and get ready to watch them in it again this year! I'll admit it - we got whipped in the last 2 .. BUT we were there! So, enjoy your Holiday Bowl or Barack Obama IBM Tangerine Bowl trip .. and we'll kick back and wait for the NC game again in the Orange Bowl!!

I don't know of any Big 10 fans that are afraid of a playoff. I would much rather have a playoff than have the boys sit around for 6 weeks.

HIV really REALLY wants someone to notice him.

August 6, 2008  08:38 AM ET

When one of these "powershouses" from the big ten puts a decent SEC team on their schedule they can start talking about how great they are. As long as your toughest out of conference foe is a Pac Ten team, you have no credibility. I'll give you this, OSU is the best team in the Pac-Mac-Big ten superconference. Other than that, they have a losing record in the past few years, being lucky that sorry NC State had injuries when they came to visit a while back.

August 6, 2008  08:39 AM ET

2007/08 LSU 38, OS 24; 2006/07 Florida 41, OS 14: 2001/02 S. Carolina 31, OS 28; 2000/01 S. Carolina 24, OS 7; 1995/96 Tenn 20, OS 14; 1994/95 Alabama 24, OS 17, 1992/93 Georgia 21, OS 14; 1989/90 Auburn 31, OS 14; 1977/78 Alabama 35, OS 6; need I go on? If the PAC 10 and the (alleged) Big Ten weren't covering each others backside by requiring both send their "champions" (LOL) to play in the "Rose Bore" the damage to both conferences would be much worse. Talk about brilliant scheduling! WOW!

August 6, 2008  08:43 AM ET

OSU SHOULD receive some heat for **** all over themselves two years in a row. You are there to win right? That aside, I do agree Big 10 bashing is the in thing now. A few years ago the Pac-10 was a frequent traget, before that Big East. No big deal.
