Bears: Orton to start for now

The secret was given away at the start of practice when the Bears rehearsed their pre-game introduction with Kyle Orton dashing out with the first team. Introducing your starting quarterback, at least for this week. Coach Lovie Smith announced Orton as the starter for Thursday night's exhibition against the Chiefs at Soldier Field, with Rex Grossman also playing in the first half. The two will flip-flop roles next week at Seattle, with Grossman getting the starting nod.

Go Kyle! He may not win games but he certainly won't lose them either. This tells me one thing...Rex is still the same old Rex! Let's start a new rumor...Jeff Garcia to the Bears!

orton might not be a great qb, but like BBB said, he just needs to avoid losing them. rex has shown one consistent ability in the nfl, to make costly mistakes, weekly.

maybe orton can help by not hurting the bears weekly.

Gacia to the Bears is a great call, BBBB. A couple years of Jeff would do nicely while the Bears find themselves the QB of the future, in the draft or maybe if Simms is healthy, or similar.

August 6, 2008  08:09 AM ET

We all know that the Bears best offense is their great defense anyway (or maybe special teams). I think Grossman just tries too hard.

August 6, 2008  08:25 AM ET

He couldn't be any worse than Rex Grossman..

August 6, 2008  08:26 AM ET

As it stands, who starts at QB doesn't really matter for the Bears. Jerry's first draft pick hasn't even made it to the practice field because of back spasms. It looks like whoever lines up behind that o-line is going to be killed anyway. Good luck Orton.

August 6, 2008  08:33 AM ET

The Bears are following the recipe for success, huh?

August 6, 2008  08:48 AM ET

actually considering jeff garcia is at a stand still with the bucs right now....god only knows why a guy his age is worried bout contracts....

and brett favre seems to really be heading down south anyways...i dont think he'll be too happy....so garcia to the bears..not too farfetched if you ask me...nice thinking bears backer haha

I agree PW...Orton just needs to manage and not lose games. Then perhaps a fire islit under Grossman and he somewhere down the line overtakes Orton. Might not be able to. Trust me before Big Ben got to Pittsburgh, since watchign Steeler games since 1985 I can sympathize with mediocrity. From Mark Malone to Kordell Stewart. A good QB will emerge in the windy city eventually.

August 6, 2008  10:17 AM ET

Awful QB.

August 6, 2008  10:48 AM ET

SkoalVikes, here's one for you....(on the phone) Hello, is this kettle? This is pot...you're black!" C'mon dude! How is a Vikings fan dogging out anybody elses QB situation. I would take Orton or Grossman over, what is his name, er uh, that loser QB in Minnesota. Aren't the vikings compensating for their QB by having two three down backs?

I want the entire Bears team to grow beards like Orton. That would be rad.
A bunch of grizzly looking dudes smashing you in the mouth during a blizzard!

BEAR DOWN!!!!

Orton has the intangibles that you want in a Qb but he's mentally and physically less favored than Grossman. Grossman's head is the issue with him. They have Hanie in camp, but he's been pretty silent. They need a veteran backup, but for now Orton's got to be the favorite.
