Rangers closer chastised on mound

C.J. Wilson's days as the Rangers' closer appear to be over. If not forever, probably for the year and certainly for the next two weeks. After a disastrous return to the mound for the first time since Friday, Wilson was placed on the disabled list with bone spurs in his elbow. The decision was made after a 30-minute meeting that manager Ron Washington acknowledged was unpleasant. It happened after Wilson, who entered the game with a six-run lead, allowed a pair of walks, a hit batter and a grand slam to Richie Sexson. During his time on the mound, Wilson was vigorously chastised on one occasion by catcher Gerald Laird. Things really got explosive, however, when Washington came out to get him and Wilson casually flipped the ball in the air and started walking off the mound. Washington caught it, yanked Wilson back up on the mound, handed him the ball again and told him to hand it to him.

A home run to Sexton should land someone on the disabled list.

Damn, I like Ron Washington more and more!

I was actually surprised that Ron Washington was still their skipper....

When did Steve Jeltz change his name to Ron Washington?

Was Washington smokin' a Menthol and sippin a Colt .45? He just reminds me of the layed off autoworkers I used to see in Detroit back in the 80's

Don't be mad at me because someone mocks you and it's funny and no one in any of these threads respects you. But by all means, keep doing it. Like I said before, I'd hate to see you end up harming yourself....or worse off someone else. LOSER!

August 6, 2008  09:15 AM ET

Did anyone actually see this? Wilson sounds like a little punk b-tch.

August 6, 2008  09:28 AM ET

Weapon fights like a little girl!!! Who talks trash over the internet anymore? Does that make you feel tough? Does it boost your ego? I bet after you wrote that, you went into your living room and beat on your chest for a few minutes. I have an idea for you...............you should drive down to the local elementary, beat up a 3rd grader, then that will really complete your journey to becoming a tough guy!!

It's sad that a major league manager is the one that has to teach KIDS manners these days. Glad he did it, wish more would follow suit. Maybe the crybabies in this league would finally wake up.

Nice to see a manager not take that kind of crap from his players. Washington made the right move in forcing Wilson to hand him the ball the right way the second time. If the Sox had just reeled Manny in like that a few years back he'd probably still be in Boston.

August 6, 2008  09:32 AM ET

Oh and by the way, you are talking trash over the internet, so you answered your own question. Now go, and wrestle some steer.

August 6, 2008  09:43 AM ET

I agree....I like Washington more and more. If Wilson just stunk it up and gave up a GS to Sexson......why would he have attitude??

Washington earned my respect with that move. When you pitch like crap you have no right to show up your manager when he comes to pull you from the game. It is selfish of Wilson to act like that because it is a team sport and at that time he was not giving his team the best chance to win that game. Washington's job is to make moves that give his team the best chance to win. The rest of the players I am sure took note of what happened and you can be sure they will stay in line and not risk being embarrased on the field like Wilson was.
