Pirates: Jays turned down Bay trade

Front-office sources with the Pirates told Metro yesterday that, before MLB's July 31 trade deadline, they made a two-for-one proposal in which they would have dealt all-star Jason Bay to Toronto for minor-leaguers Travis Snider and Brett Cecil. The Jays mulled it over and declined. Snider is a power-hitting outfielder/first baseman. Cecil is a left-handed pitcher. Baseball America ranks the two as the Jays'most promising minor-leaguers.

I think that may have been smart of the Jays if the two prospects are that good. Bay would've helped, but they aren't going to win this year or probably next, so they were probably smart to hang onto the young hitters.

the jays made the right choice here. instead of planning for now they are planning for the future. only problem is it means the jays aren't gonna be makin a run for the post season FOR THE NEXT COUPLE YEARS!!!!! Good job JP :p

Tis a scientific fact, that the elbow previously served as an erogenous zone

Why in the world world Toronto, going no where except maybe last place in the AL East, trade two solid prospects for Bay? One of the first smart moves by Ricciardi.

No argument from me! Jays lost, Red Sox gain the jays are'nt going anywhere its all about the ususal Sox,Yanks & to my surprise the Rays.

August 7, 2008  10:57 AM ET

Think about it though right now the Yanks and red sox are stacked. if the jays went for bay this season it would help them but wouldn't put them over the yanks or red sox. now if we wait for Snider and other prospects to emerge like LIND then maybe we got a shot. Still would have been nice to have bay

August 7, 2008  11:13 AM ET

Bay is a good player and will continue to be one...especially now that he has a team that can hit around him.

Don't get why the jays would want to trade for him, they stink too.

August 7, 2008  11:14 AM ET

Don't mortgage your future, I hate it when teams do a quick fix, the guy turns out to be a bum, or is a free agent the next year, or is a bum AND a free agent the following year and they lose quality kids in the minors. Ergo, GOOD MOVE BLUE JAYS.

the jays would love to have the best canadian player playing in canada. matt
