Bruins expand passing game

Total offense is the plan for UCLA this season. That desire has been evident through the first two days of training camp, as running backs and tight ends are more involved with the passing game than they were last season. "It's tough to cover everybody," offensive coordinator Norm Chow said. "Teams do a nice job of covering receivers, so you got to get the ball to your backs. We need to force teams to cover 53 1/3 yards on every play." The passing game has been a sideline-to-sideline show thus far, with a large cast, something that seemed missing last season. Bruins tight ends caught only 15 passes in 2007 and had only 63 receptions the last two seasons. Running backs caught 25 passes in 2007.

Okay, so UCLA is going to a modified spread. Big whoop.

Norm Chow should do a good job out there. It's too bad that there are no AD's in the nation with the balls to name him a head coach.

August 7, 2008  11:05 AM ET

I agree JHOVA; I think USC lost a lot when Norm left and it is a shame that no team NFL (Baltimore, Raiders, Falcons come to mind) or College team had the fortitude to name him a head coach.

What do ya think this year Jabril? USC gonna have anything for UCLA???

August 7, 2008  11:24 AM ET

One name everyone should already know, Reggie Carter. Two more names that will become household, Rahim Moore & Jonathan Franklin.

Ricky couldn't do squat for the Huskies (I know, I was living there at the time) and now he's preaching the same song and dance at UCLA. As always, it will come down to the quality of players recruited vs. the raw coaching ability of Mr. "old"heisel.

August 7, 2008  12:33 PM ET

Rick's gettin a nice little comb-over there....

August 7, 2008  12:58 PM ET

The Bruins have a passing game ... ?

August 7, 2008  01:32 PM ET

The bruins still have a long way to go to break out of the mediocrity that program has been stuck in for years. They do have a very interesting coaching staff now though. Lets see the bruins make the PAC-10 a bit tougher for USC to win the conference.

We will be force in '09!

You guys should read the whole article. It's staggering how limited our offense was under Karl Dorrell. Did you know that we played EVERY down last year with the SAME snap count? He never varied it. How can you play football like that?
Reading about the differences makes me amazed that UCLA won a single game last year.

As for Neuheisal not doing squat for the Huskies....it's called ROSE BOWL, look it up. UW fired Rick because he interviewed with the Forty-Niners for a job and then lied about it (would you tell your current boss you were interviewing elsewhere?)

Things are looking bright for the future of Bruin Football, we'll just have to see how long we can keep this three-headed monster together.

Pete Carroll on Media Day
"I could care less," Carroll said of Neuheisel's declaration. "Guys say what they've got to say. They've got their teams to run. ... It's just words."

RN is a classless guy. Hopefully, UDub will get better so they can kick the you know what out of his team. Too bad they gave him a third chance.

BruinsWin!

You got a selective memory there, BruinsWin! Let's not forget the recruiting violations at Colorado, his failure to discipline his players at UDub, including playing a guy who had an outstanding arrest warrant, and the gambling issues at WA. Indeed, it wasn't for talking to the 49ers that got him fired from UDub: it was a variety of things. You UCLAns have got yourself a rare prize in Ricky. I'll chalked your remiss memory up to optimism. It had better be blind because Ricky is bad news. Just wait for the NCAA to come calling. Good luck.

The Rose Bowl is is going to become the "ORANGE" bowl here on Sept 1st. I cant wait!

August 8, 2008  05:01 PM ET

Yeah Farscape, Just like you guys took over the stadium last year at Cal huh? I saw a ton of UT fans leaving early in the 4th quarter. Hope the Little Orange will at least stay for the whole game this time.

August 8, 2008  06:34 PM ET

Lefty6,

LOL. I had a great time in your stadium last year regardless of the loss. I took more crap from your fans than I gave them while they were leaving at half-time during their road trip to Knoxvegas in 2006. Oh well, thats what you have to expect when you travel to a road game.

I had to eat crow, but at least I did fire back one truth to your fan base. The only real BEARS in CA are the UCLA BRUINS! Go Bruins! I guess they proved me right to after last years UCLA/Cal game.

Farscape

Hardly. Bruins are a chump team thanks to Dorrell. They may win under Neugrassle, but better have the dustpan ready, because the NCAA will be calling.

They won the CAL game last year because of Longshore's late mistake. In other words, CAL lost, the Bruins didn't win. (Indeed, the Bruins went on to lose the next how many?) Their uniforms are girl-pretty though.

I think Rick is Lou Holts son. The NCAA comes calling every place they have been.
