Arenas will opt out of D.C.

Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas said last night that he will opt out of his contract after next season and become a free agent. Arenas, who signed a six-year, $65 million contract in the summer of 2003, said his decision is based on family and business concerns rather than feelings about the direction in which the Wizards are headed as an organization.

Wow! I think Arenas honestly did it this time. How can you tell a forecast like that before the next season has even begun? If I was a hardcore fan for the Wizards I would make sure I went to every game and boo Arenas off the court every night.

A guy like Arenas doesn't seem to understand his responsibilities as a teammate, as a star, and most importantly as the cornerstone of a franchise. If he left that would be OK with me, but now everyone knows he is leaving which will definetly demote all ambitions the team may have had; Wizards aren't going to make the playoffs next season because of this idiot now.

Arenas is doing the right thing. The Wizards haven't added anything to a team that was a contender last season, relying on big men like Haywood and Etan Thomas. Not only is Gilbert great for DC(I know, I live about 7 miles from the Verizon Center) but if they aren't willing to build around Caron/Gilbert/Jamison then what's the point of staying around? He wants to win, and more than likely now I can see him being traded this offseason rather then letting him go for nothing.

It's just business. If the Wizards had an option and they announced that they would not be re-signing a player would there be any problem with that? At least Arenas is giving them notice so maybe they can move him before next year's deadline instead of losing him ang getting nothing in return (Shaq/Magic, Mutumbo/Nuggets, Gugliotta/Wolves). Wizards should be shopping Arenas now. Maybe they can package him in exchange for a lottery selection and a veteran player?

Azeron, you are right on point!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

History has shown that teams are stupid for letting their players go and not get anything back. Gilbert is OK but I would not put him on that "elite" level. At this time, I can only think of one team that needs a Gilbert Arenas and accept him and that is the Dallas Mavericks. They need a change and have pieces that the Wizards would be interested in.

Proposed trade................Wizards trade Haywood, Daniels, and Agent 0 for Terry, Harris, and Dampier

Washington gets rid of two problem players and get younger with Harris
Dallas gets Dirk a viable "sidekick" for the playoff run

Washington lineup.............Terry, Harris, Butler, Jamison, Dampier with thomas, hayes, songalia, and the #16 pick

Dallas.....................Daniels, Arenas, Howard, Dirk, Haywood with Stackhouse, Diop, George, Ager

Washington is solid in playoffs and Dallas doesnt choke in playoffs

if gilbert opts out and quits on his team its all right it the teams fault, but if kobe does it he's a self centered jerk and he won a championship...the double standards continue to amaze me...

RIGHT ON donny you said it all>

June 10, 2007  07:14 PM ET

He's just doing it to get a more long term and more money contract he still wants to be wizard

June 11, 2007  01:06 AM ET

Teams would be very wary of his damaged knee, perhaps! If there was a trading package Jamison knee isn't as strong either.

June 11, 2007  01:57 AM ET

trade him to the lakers for Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum......

With Kobe in the post and slashing all day, Agent #0 can jack up his threes any time he wants...the lake show would average at least 110+ points per game...

June 11, 2007  04:03 AM ET

agent ZERO is a BIGGER ball hog than kobe, who doesnt shoot a high percentage..i dont see how that helps

June 11, 2007  05:08 AM ET

Azeron and Big Booth, I think you guys are missing a key factor at this point. Now that he's made this announcement, teams around the league know of his intention to opt out. You say the Wizards should attempt to trade him, but now teams have the option of simply waiting out his decision and picking him up as a FA. It really comes down to just how many teams are interested in him, and how much money they can put forth for a player in the open market.

June 11, 2007  03:11 PM ET

OK, your comment makes no sense. TRADE Arenas now BEFORE he becomes a free agent and get rid of the headache NOW

So it seems as though YOU are missing a key factor so in the famous words of Al Pacino in Heat

YOU CAN GET KILLED WALKING YOUR DOGGY
