The Lakers and point guard Sun Yue have agreed to terms on a two-season contract, the team confirmed Thursday. The Lakers hope to sign Sun formally within the next few days, team spokesman John Black said. "Hopefully, it will get done soon," Black said. Sun, known as the Chinese Magic Johnson because of his eye-catching playmaking ability, will face his future teammate Kobe Bryant when China plays the United States on Sunday in the Olympic Games opener in Beijing. The Lakers drafted the 6-foot-9, 212-pound Sun in the second round in 2007. He spent last season with Aoshen, his Beijing club team, and also played with the Chinese National team in preparation for the Olympics.

can't wait to see how he does against Team USA. If he produces for them and can play D.... then watch out for the Lakers!!!

talk about high expectations!

Way to overhyped. If he was that good then the Lakers would have signed him already last year. He couldn't even make it for 15th spot on the roster last year.

Chinese Magic? He's bi?

August 8, 2008  08:41 AM ET

For him to make it in the NBA, he would have to be a major leader for the Chinese team because he is a PG. That means he should close or equivalent to the likes of Tony Parker, Calderon, etc

You must not watch the NBA draft very often. A lot of players are drafted but can't actually play in the league for 2-3 years due to not being able to get out of foriegn contracts. The Spurs have done it the last 2 years. When they get out of their contracts, their rights are owned by the team that drafted them so nobody else can sign them.

well we can see this guy play on sunday with the Team USA opener for the olympics

August 8, 2008  09:39 AM ET

So I guess they didn't take Sasha's contract into consideration..lol..Why the name "chinese magic" ? That don't sound too hot...

I've heard of this guy, and I saw that he is very good, but 6-foot-9, 212-pound PG? I highly doubt that. Put him at SG/SF.

I've seen the chinese play against the aussie. "Chinese magic" can't get the ball over the half court, and yao can never touch the ball.

No such thing as a chinese Magic one is a brotha the other is Asian!? Did i miss something this kid is unproven so how can anybody even put him in the same sentence as MAGIC!!!

you really don't get it do you? sun yue, when he was drafted, was playing for some pro team in china, hence, the lakers can't sign him to a contract since he's still under one there, the same thing happened to manu ginobili and andrei kirilenko who didn't play right away for the spurs and jazz, respectively, cos they are still under contracts overseas. and sun yue isn't really that good of a player, but for his size, indeed his playmaking skills are exceptional, that's why the nickname "chinese magic".
