The Giants spent their offseason trying to upgrade their backup quarterback situation. Maybe the solution was always right in their own backyard. Chad Pennington, released Thursday by the Jets, is apparently on the Giants' radar screen as they search for a viable backup to Eli Manning. They already have veterans Anthony Wright and David Carr on the roster battling for the job, but GM Jerry Reese didn't deny they might have an interest in the now ex-Jet.

If Eli gets hurt they are screwed....David Carr....yipes

I'm tellin ya he has a fire lit under him because Shannon Sharpe said his arm is weaker than Shannon's papergirl's

August 8, 2008  07:35 AM ET

Carr didnt look bad last night But Chad would be a nice backup for sure..

August 8, 2008  07:44 AM ET

This is dumb. 5 stories all related to the favre - jets deal

August 8, 2008  07:47 AM ET

guess they are not sold on Carr. Who would be.

August 8, 2008  07:52 AM ET

They do not have the cap space for the kind of money he will want. Any money left after signing the lineman to long term deals will go to Burress. I just don't see it. Pennington will want to get out of town.

August 8, 2008  07:58 AM ET

Carr was horrible in Carolina I have to admit, but he did well
in TX at times....

August 8, 2008  08:08 AM ET

why would CP take a backup job when he can get a starter's job with 4+ teams in the nfl.

August 8, 2008  08:14 AM ET

depends on the team.

August 8, 2008  08:21 AM ET

PLEASE DUMP CARR.........who's dumb **** idea was it to bring this proven loser into NY?

August 8, 2008  08:34 AM ET

I get the feeling that they just don't think Carr is gonna' be the man for them ....

August 8, 2008  08:34 AM ET

They got him for $1 million. That is why they signed him. Guess a million is not what it used to be. I suspect Wright will be the number two anyways. They wanted Collins, but the Redskins gave him a two year $3 million a year contract.

Chad Pennington will go to one of the following teams:

Dolphins
Bears
Vikings

August 8, 2008  08:53 AM ET

Patriots. We need a veteran backup. Cassel looked like a scared little wuss. Guitirezz flashed leadership but wilted when it counted most. O'Connell looked better than both, calm and decisive.

I say dump Cassel and bring in Pennington. Cassel hasn't started a game since HS.

Oh, one other interesting note: Only 2 teams (maybe 3) were interested in Favre. 6 are interested in Chad right off the bat. What does that tell you?

yeah, I know Chad was released and Favre traded, but I still think it says something.

Not really . . . . .They knew Favre would not come in as a backup. I guarantee you if Pennigton was being traded 6 teams would not be interested because he would probably only get a chance to start for maybe Miami.

Don't think Chad wants to be a backup. I think he feels he can start for several teams. Key words there being "he feels." Still, the guy is competent. His arm strength is basically his weak point. I'd take him over Cleo Lemon and Rex Grossman, that's for sure.
