Lions may dump Kitna for Stanton

Nobody knows right now if Drew Stanton can perform at this level, but it's also that air of uncertainty that makes him Rod Marinelli's trump card this season. The Lions think they're a playoff team. Common sense suggests otherwise, and should the Lions once again live down to the general public's low expectations, Marinelli might replace Jon Kitna with Stanton as the starting quarterback. As much as Marinelli preaches about competing hard every snap, he has become a realist entering his third season as head coach. Such a move could buy Marinelli another season because nothing hypnotizes the Ford family and equally gullible Lions fans more than the nurturing of yet another untested quarterback. Stanton currently ranks third on the depth charts behind Dan Orlovsky, who played decently enough in his four possessions against the Giants.

The Lions' mistake was drafting 900 WRs in the last like 10 drafts and never drafting a decent quarterback.

All 3 QBs played fine last night, but it was nice to see a QB who could run with the ball. Still, Kitna's seasoned and tough and the Lions would be idiots to make a change before the season even starts.

"General public's low expectations..." What an understatement.

This is the stupidest article by a crappy writer named Drew Sharp!!!! Yea Drew looked good but 1 game against the Giants 3rd string D isnt enuff to say kitna is gone, Kitna looked good last night. His job is safe barring an injury.

August 8, 2008  09:08 AM ET

seriously, are the lions intentionally sucking? oh wait, we've known that answer for a decade.

August 8, 2008  09:24 AM ET

Lions who Da?

August 8, 2008  09:44 AM ET

I bet he didn't forecast this coming his way!

August 8, 2008  09:48 AM ET

Wow, this is stupid. Drew Stanton threw 29 Int's as Sr at MSU.

Kitna is a Good QB. Why would you dump him for someone who hasn't played on meaningful down in the NFL. It he were to tear it up in the Preseason and Kitna got hurt during the season, and Stanton played very well I could see.

This is Dumb. Marinelli has turned this into a Good Team. They aren't the same Lions as they have been for the past 600,000 years. They will be if they get rid of Kitna.

August 8, 2008  10:10 AM ET

Do it! Kitna is a bum.

August 8, 2008  10:13 AM ET

Good Lord, one preseason game and the story is about getting rid of Kitna?? Sheesh.

August 8, 2008  10:13 AM ET

What Would Kitna Do? ( W.W.K.D. )

August 8, 2008  10:20 AM ET

If Kitna is dumped by the Lions, the Bears should offer him a contract immediately. Bears are going nowhere with Orton or Grossman. WAKE UP JERRY. HELLO.

August 8, 2008  10:31 AM ET

Who would have ever thought it? The Lions have the best QB in the NFC Central. That would be Kitna.

August 8, 2008  10:35 AM ET

i have an idea before stanton gets the team how about he try to throw the ball at least 15 yards, at least what i say last night he just dinked and dunked

August 8, 2008  10:42 AM ET

I wonder what Brett Favre thinks about the Lions quarterback situation?

Can there be two lamer-brained managements in the NFL than the Bears and Lions? When will they get rid of Millen? what is he, Ford's illegitimate son?

August 8, 2008  10:54 AM ET

What is in the gatorade the NFC north is drinking? Dump Favre? Dump Kitna?
Sheesh. As if good QBs grow on trees.

The Chicago media is of course slamming our QBs today. Granted they didn't light the world on fire but at least they put up 83.8 and 106.2 QB ratings with a patchwork line and WRs full of ???? in the first preseason game.

I'm done with AM sports radio.

August 8, 2008  11:24 AM ET

Seriously the dumbest thing I've heard so far. If they get rid of Kitna, they are complete morons. Kitna is so underrated and needs to be more respected by the organization.

As far as the Chicago QBs are concerned, did you see how amateur they look??? Orton drops the ball and Grossman falls backward after the snap. I felt like I was watching a circus of clowns of something. Chicago is HORRIBLE at picking QBS. Why didn't they draft one or trade for a seasoned QB during the offseason?

August 8, 2008  11:34 AM ET

Kitna can only hope this is true.

Drew Sharp is a worthless hack, though, so Kitna probably knows he has at least a few more months to wake up realizing he's employed by the Fords.

August 8, 2008  11:36 AM ET

50yr,
you are showing your age....there is no NFC Central! I think they call it something else now...I'll look it up on that "internets" invented by Gore and now used Regularly by our Commander in Chief.

I know, it can get ugly. Thats life in Chicago football. I just don't see someone coming in and taking over with smashing success. Chad Pennington? We already had a Brian Greise. All I'm saying is hopefully the patience pays off with either guy or both. They both have ability and the last few games of last season gives me an ounce of hope.

But I'll sure take Kitna if they want to dump him!

As bad as the media were making the 08 Bears to be I wasn't that unhappy with last nights game. Especially since there are like 6 new starters. It'll take some time.

And who knew Garret Wolfe was such a burner? He looked like a garden gnome on meth!
