Why LeBron may play in Europe

Not surprisingly, LeBron James was happy to fan rumors that he would be open to fielding offers from European teams when his contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers expires in 2010. For the N.B.A. megastar, what better place is there to attract foreign investors into the eventual bidding war than the Summer Olympic Games? "Growing up, you never think about any other league besides the N.B.A.," James said at the United States men's basketball team news conference Friday morning. "But things are changing really fast and you never know. I can't throw all my eggs in one basket. There are going to be a lot of opportunities for me in 2010 to decide if I want to stay with Cleveland or if I want to go elsewhere." Asked if he ever imagined the possibility of playing abroad, he added: "Did I ever imagine it? No. Is it a possibility? Yes." With N.B.A. teams still bound by a salary cap, with the U.S. economy in a downturn and the dollar sliding against the Euro, it is always possible that in two years LeBron Inc. would take a hard look at a tax-free megadeal to become the American David Beckham. Of course, Nike, his corporate underwriter, would have to give such a relocation its blessing. A salary of $50 million has been floated, which may sound ridiculous, except for the fact that Michael Jordan earned over $30 million at the end of his run with the Bulls -- and that was 10 years ago. Is such an offer from an owner in Europe -- let's hypothesize from a Russian with oil money to burn and the audacity and ego to reel in an American celebrity -- so far-fetched?

Stern better address these problem quick before he regrets standing by hoping the enigma of the NBA will keep players here. Money talks, B.S. walks.

August 8, 2008  07:46 AM ET

Stern cant remove the sallary cap no matter what, it would ruin the sport. The knicks, lakers, Mavericks, and some of the other wealthier teams would just buy titles. Its not for Stern to fix, its for the players to trim off their greed a little bit, and support the league that gave them everything they have... With out the NBA lets face it, Kobe is a smart guy and could have done something with himself, Lebron can hardly read... He'd be homeless

August 8, 2008  07:46 AM ET

HAHA... Im sure someone will get all fired up by that one... These forums have been boring lately

August 8, 2008  08:03 AM ET

Memo to LeBron: Go, nobody is stopping you.

Fact is, you're not good enough to put a team on your shoulders and win a championship here, so go over to the minor leagues, like Beckham did coming over here, dominate and win a bunch of titles. Don't worry, REAL basketball players who want to win, not just become a billionaire, will be left to win the rings you weren't going to win anyway.

Whether you LeBron fans like it or not, he never came to the NBA to win championships, he came to establish the LeBron brand. I don't fault him for it, we all have our motivations, his just doesn't happen to be winning.

August 8, 2008  08:13 AM ET

yeah we are all witness to it too!!! LOL

August 8, 2008  08:14 AM ET

If anyone wants more than 25-30m a year- have fun in Europe or Russia. You ruin the team here by taking that much money against the cap...

August 8, 2008  08:28 AM ET

Listen, I'm not even a Lebron fan, but you can't say that he can't carry a team to a champtionship.

Who else was on that team that went to the Finals in '07? It was Lebron and a bunch of (barely) role players at best. And they (he) went to the Finals!!

Sure they got spanked by the Spurs, but experience does amazing things in those situations

August 8, 2008  08:34 AM ET

No player can carry a team to a championship by himself, not even Jordan. It's a total team effort that's including the coaches. A not so great supporting cast will do but that supporting cast has to be consistent and follow the team philosophy.

August 8, 2008  08:35 AM ET

That would be the downfall of the NBA if Lebron goes to Eurpoe.

August 8, 2008  08:49 AM ET

Mo Syzlak, Jordan didn't even carry his team to a championship... Do your homework... He had excellent role players, and face it, he had Pippen... Without Pippen, he wouldn't have won ANY of those championships... So don't crack your lips about a Jordan chamionship without saying Pippen...

If Lebron and Kobe want to go overseas for more money, then they are making the smart choice... Skills=$... Don't you dare call these players greedy for making a smart business decision... Nobody says anything about these business owners out here buying companies and firing thousands of employees to save a buck.. That's greed, this is not that!!!

August 8, 2008  08:53 AM ET

Moe - that attitude is exactly why we got our **** handed to us in the 2004 Olympics by the foreign teams. The NBA is not the "World League" of basketball where the greatest players are anymore. The rest of the world has caught on, and it's an international game. I can tell you this - if someone offered me $50/year to play basketball in a country with cool food, beautiful women, and NO TAXES, I'd be all over it.

August 8, 2008  08:54 AM ET

Ok fellas, maybe I go a little too far when I say "carry a team", I do understand that any great player needs help. And Bloodclott, I never said they were greedy, I defend these guys rights to make all the money they can, trust this isn't about money. My point is simple: LeBron isn't good enough to win a championship here, so go play in the minor leagues. Kobe has rings, whether people want to dispute that or not, I can understand him going.

This is not about greed, just to make it clear. LeBron has his motivations, winning championships isn't one of them.

August 8, 2008  09:06 AM ET

You win a championship if you happen to be in the right place at the right time.
There are hundreds of great players who never win a championship. Even the best player would never win a title without the right team. How do some of you guys know that LeBron won t have won a title 15 years from now?He may win zero, he may win 5 titles, you just don t know it.

If he is smart, he goes to europe, earns 200 million in 4 years, comes back to the us and plays for the minimum, so his team (whereever he goes) could create a superior team. That is the way I would do it, you could earn the money first, then go to a championship caliber team.

August 8, 2008  09:15 AM ET

The only thing bigger than NBA players greedy pickets is their ego. Lebron could win 10 championships in a row in Europe but if he never wins one here in the NBA he won't be discussed as one of the greatest ever.

And as far as the Olympics go pleeeease the NBA has the best players in the world it's not even close. The olympic medal however goes to the best TEAM.

August 8, 2008  09:17 AM ET

Oops I posted but I wanted to finish by saying you stick whatever the top 3 teams in the Olympics end up being in the NBA for a season they would get destroyed.

August 8, 2008  09:32 AM ET

This is effin crazy. Can't David Stern do something to stop this? I'm not watching the NBA anymore if Lebron leaves.

August 8, 2008  09:33 AM ET

I see LeBron going more than I see Kobe going. I get that it's all about the money, but these two guys may be seriously hurting their chances at a few NBA records since they started in the L so young.

August 8, 2008  09:33 AM ET

well all this money in europe is very nice, in just one 50 game season or less he could make more than in 4 seasons in the nba, i can see him doing this past his prime a little, thats what becks did. He would do it his next free agency period, not this one, thats how is see it.

August 8, 2008  09:37 AM ET

He could possibly make 50 million dollars..Duh, I think I would consider going too..
