Why Giles nixed Red Sox trade
If the Red Sox could have worked out a deal for Brian Giles, whom they claimed off waivers Wednesday, he would have been a helpful piece to a team battling for a postseason berth. Yesterday, Giles nixed a trade to the Sox, but they weren't too broken up about it. While they would have liked to have the outfielder, a high on-base-percentage player, it was about a 50-50 split between wanting him and blocking him from going to another team (the Rays). The outfielder, 37, is comfortable in San Diego, because of his family's ties to the area and because he likes the playing time. Giles grew up in San Diego and is interested in finishing his career there. He starts for the Padres, and he would not have done so for the Sox.

He didn't want to be a 4th outfielder. At least he plays everyday in San Diego.

What's this about..... not diminishing his value by making him an off the bench player..... Giles has almost always played for losers, so it's obviously rubbed off on him...... when you'd rather play out the string rather than get back in the thick of things, you're a money grubbing loser.....

He just chose to play for fans that can properly pronounce "chowder".

Let's see will I win a world series with Boston? Who cares, I'm already getting paid, in San Diego, so why should I make that extra effort just for a ring. I have zero respect for Giles. When the going gets tough the tough get going. Obviously Giles is a Stay Puff Marshmellow Man.

He's part of the stay in San Diego Maddux club. Nice easy going lifestyle. Plenty of sunshine, and plenty of spare time in October. Let's go golfing!!

Going after a player so another team does'nt get him? Can't believe the Sox are going to these tactics. What's the matter? Don't think you can win the division if the Rays get this guy. Not alot of confidence in your team's ability to get the job done?

God loves the Red Sox. Two or Three Championships in 100 years and the first one (over Pittsburgh) was rigged to get their league some respectability.

Another player who really wanted to go to Boston:
Bob Wojnowski: Now let me ask you this, and this has become a weird issue here in Detroit, and I'm curious as to what you can, or are willing to say; Marian Hossa signs with the Red Wings for one year, at $7.4 million, turning down like $80 million, or $100 million, from Edmonton, or Boston, or whatever, and we, of course, here, 'Hey, he wants to win a Stanley Cup, the Red Wings are a great organization'..

Great example of a good guy who is playing the game because he loves to play it.

I don't understand bashing the guy. He gets playing time in SD. Sure, they're a bad team, but at his age, perhaps it's more about playing and enjoying the game than being a spare on a second place team. I, for one, dislike the aged player that goes to a winning club just for a last gasp at a championship.

The guy wants to stay in San Diego with his F-A-M-I-L-Y, how many thousands of miles is that away from Boston? I can't say I blame him. I guarantee he would have jumped ship to a team like the Angels. Basically just about any contending west coast team, he probably would have said yes.

This is dumb. If it had been any other team, this wouldn't even be news. Since it's Boston, though, ESPN and SI, the official network and magazine, respectively, of the Boston Red Sox, have to make a big deal out of it. Who cares? The guy doesn't want to go to Boston. He has the right to veto a trade to them because they are one of the teams in his limited no-trade clause. Getting traded isn't easy on these guys, particularly if they have to move 3,000 miles in the middle of the season.

If he didn't want to go, he didn't want to go. He's got the right to say no. I imagine he would have gone to the Angels, but that deal didn't happen because they're gonna win the AL Pennant regardless of where Brian Giles is playing.
And just for the record, I'm not Canadian, regardless of what the news-story link would indicate.

I respect the idea that he'd rather be playing in San Diego than sitting on the bench in Boston.
