Effects of NFL's new coin-toss rule

Asked about the Patriots' decision to defer the opening toss Thursday night, and whether it was a decision made to highlight the NFL's new rule, Bill Belichick said he envisions deferring all the time. "I think it will be a regular occurrence and it will probably be what most teams [do]. The college coaches I've talked to have pretty much all told me that everyone pretty much always defers when they win the toss in college, it's like 100 percent of the time. My guess is that it will approach that in the NFL as well, in time. Whether it does right off the bat, I don't know. It would take some type of extreme conditions or an unusual experience to not do that if you win the toss. That's our approach going into it."

Lady's Coach.....
"League owners adopted the college rule that allows the option to decide whether to kick off or receive the football until the second half after winning the pregame toss."
Of course they will defer to the second half. You can still get to receive the ball then.

Thanks 50...........they needed a rule about this? Jeezy Creezy. What's the next rule going to be, wash your hands with Purell after touching the ball?

August 9, 2008  10:11 AM ET

what is next, it is either heads or tails. pretty 50 / 50 if you don't want the ball to start you get it to start the second half. and the story is...................?

vaughn9 ..The story is...When the oracle speaks, everybody listens....Hey, where is his sweatshirt? Whats going on here? Don't tell me he signed an apparel deal with Walmart....

August 9, 2008  10:50 AM ET

"Heads you defer, tails you don't" !!!

August 9, 2008  11:23 AM ET

He'd best be wearing a sweatshirt for the season opener or I'll be wanting to know the reason why. And it better be gray, too.

OK,
Thoughts....

Lady GREAT use of the Phonetics to get your question across...generally in USAF parlance you need and "Oscar" at the end (for over...like a radio transmission)

Same with the Army, +40. We use the "Oscar" as well (but, remember, pronounced properly, it's "Oscah" so you can understand it over the radio).

Hey Hooah, is that your tongue in your cheek or a big wad of chaw?

JUST KIDDING!!! = - ]

August 9, 2008  02:35 PM ET

Firm believer in the fact that if your the better team, what difference does it make. I want the ball, and I want to shove it down your throat, and I will.

August 9, 2008  03:20 PM ET

Ok this rule does actually make sense. When playing football in high school my coach instructed us if we won the toss to defer. He assumed it meant we would kick off and then recieve at the start ofthe 2nd half with our choice of end to defend. Uh wrongo!! The refs subsequently made us kick off BOTH halfs. We lost in the quarter finals to a school named Herbert Hoover whom went on to lose to eventual state champions Dupont whose starting wide receiver was none other than Randy Moss.

SteelersinMD's cats are fat ...Good story. Now I don't feel so bad that the guy has never been on a championship team......Did not know he went to HS.

August 9, 2008  03:33 PM ET

Yes he did.Ironically. I played corner and receiver too. We were going to use two of us to jam himat the line of scrimmage if we had gotten to play them. Unfortunately for Moss his high school had recently consolidated with a "rural school and where urban youth were mixed with "we need to get over the Civil War red necks." After dealing with racial taunts Moss and friends beat another student pretty badly and thislead to his derailment of a full ride to Notre Dame. At least this is the story I heard from our AD of our school.

August 9, 2008  04:59 PM ET

luckily your coach was better schooled on the rule, Bucky. Ours was livid and let loose a profanity-laden tirade, filled with spray and spit that Bill Cowher would have been proud of

August 9, 2008  09:29 PM ET

SteelersinMD's cats are fat ...Avery believable story. He was one of the first of the " total ****##### " when he first came in to the NFL. He set a very high bar for the WRs that came after him.
